Ruins of Quyang City

The Ruins of Quyang City are a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

The Ruins of Quyang City are located at the southern foot of North Xiaoling Mountain, west of Chengnan Village in Quyang Township, Donghai County, Lianyungang City. Since the Western Han Dynasty, Quyang City served as the county seat of Quyang County under Donghai Commandery. The city site is roughly rectangular, measuring 260 meters from north to south and 200 meters from east to west. Currently, three sections of the city wall on the north, west, and south sides, as well as three city gates on those same sides, remain. The remaining city walls stand 3 to 4 meters high, with bases about 5 meters wide. They were built using rammed earth with clearly visible layers. The city gates are now only visible as gaps about 8 meters wide. Artifacts unearthed at the site include Han Dynasty cloud-patterned roof tiles, rope-patterned pottery zun vessels, jars, tube tiles, flat tiles, and pottery shards. Bronze swords, iron knives, bronze mirrors, bronze arrowheads, and a bronze seal inscribed with “Jun Jia Sima” (Military Acting Sima) from the Han Dynasty have also been excavated. It was here, in Quyang (as recorded in the Book of the Later Han · Biography of Xiang Kai, with annotations by Li Xian), that the Taoist scripture Taiping Qingling Shu was obtained by Yu Ji during the Han Dynasty. In April 1995, it was designated as part of the fourth group of Cultural Relics Protection Units in Jiangsu Province. In 2013, it was listed as part of the seventh group of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units.

Extending 4 meters outward from the base of the city walls.

Construction Control Zone:

On the eastern side of the ancient city, the boundary follows the natural river; on the other three sides, the zone extends 30 meters outward from the base of the city walls.

Quyang Township: Quyang Township is named after the location of its township government, which sits on the ruins of the ancient Quyang County city from the Han Dynasty. It is situated in the southwestern part of Donghai County and borders Xin Yi City to the west. The area enjoys convenient transportation, with Xu-Lian Highway and Lianyungang–Khorgas Expressway passing through the township. The township government is 9 kilometers from Donghai Railway Station and 11 kilometers from the Donghai exit of the Lianyungang–Xuzhou Expressway. The region is rich in resources and is known as the “Hometown of Crystal.” It currently administers 12 administrative villages, covering an area of 52 square kilometers, with 49,000 mu of arable land and a population of 33,000.
