Vast greenery, beautiful churches — a summer date with Tunghai University

Located in Taichung, Tunghai University covers a vast area of 133 hectares. In addition to being an educational hub, its sprawling green spaces and the iconic Luce Memorial Chapel have made it a popular spot for visitors exploring the city. Nearby, there are also many distinctive attractions, such as the renowned Tunghai Commercial Area and the Tunghai Art Street, the first commercial district formed after the merger of Taichung County and City. Visitors to Longjing District can conveniently explore these areas as well.

Tunghai University boasts a vast campus, where towering trees form a natural green tunnel. Directional signs are placed at turns, so visitors don’t have to worry about getting lost. Among the must-see sites at Tunghai University is the stunning Luce Memorial Chapel. Its architect, I.M. Pei, was also the designer behind the Louvre renovation. The chapel’s exterior consists of four sweeping walls, while its interior ceiling features a lattice structure. Every design element is visually striking, and the radiant sunlight streaming through the side windows adds to its solemn and majestic atmosphere.

The Luce Memorial Chapel is open only from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM and 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on weekdays; it is closed to visitors during other times. Nestled on lush green lawns, the chapel is a favorite spot for photos and picnics. It’s recommended that visitors bring mosquito repellent and ointment to avoid bug bites.

Originally located near Tunghai University,Tunghai Art Streetwas jointly planned and developed by a group of art enthusiasts dedicated to promoting culture and creativity. Blending commerce with art, it was designated this year as the 21st commercial district in Greater Taichung. The area is filled with distinctive cafés, furniture shops, and craft stores, often featuring street performances and live sketches. Its rich artistic vibe attracts both domestic and international tourists.

After a day of exploring and working up an appetite, head to the food-filled Tunghai Commercial Area. The bustling Tunghai Night Market, teeming with crowds and culinary delights, offers not only popular treats like Dongshan duck heads and rag cloth tofu pudding but also the must-try "Black Meatball," one of the so-called “Three Treasures of Tunghai.” This decades-old shop makes its meatballs with black pork, radish, and dried bamboo shoots. The owner steams them and serves them with a light, slightly sweet sauce, resulting in a dish that’s non-greasy, crispy, and delicious. A Tunghai University student, Chen, shared: “I often come here after class. My favorites are the meatballs and the pork intestine and pig blood soup!” It’s clear that this affordable and tasty black meatball shop has won over the hearts of students too.One of the Three Treasures of Tunghai: the black meatballis definitely not to be missed.
