The Bao Family Mansion

The Bao Family Mansion is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Jiangsu Province.

The Bao Family Mansion was built in 1850 (the 30th year of the Daoguang reign in the Qing Dynasty) by the ancestors of Bao Yungao, a local scholar who passed the imperial examination at the county level in the late Qing Dynasty. It originally served as a bank. The exterior features high walls all around, with two layers of inner and outer gates. The outer gate faces south and is located at the eastern end, while the inner gate faces east and forms a right angle with the outer gate. Inside, there are two north-south sections: the first section is a main hall, opposite which are auxiliary rooms; the second section is a tower-like hall, separated from the first by a wall gate, with a long and narrow courtyard in between. Both halls feature post-and-lintel construction with large timber materials, and the tower-like hall uses moon beams. On the brick walls of the upper and lower wing rooms on the west side of the second section, there is a hidden door that leads to an adjacent flower hall. To the west of the flower hall, there used to be a larger building complex, now demolished. The entire structure has three sections and eighteen rooms, covering a total area of 414.5 square meters. The interior decoration is exquisite, especially the brick carvings and wooden ornaments, which are notably refined and exhibit distinct Huizhou architectural characteristics. It not only reflects the historically developed commodity economy of the region in the late Qing Dynasty but also provides aesthetic enjoyment, making it of significant value.
