Two students bravely rescue drowning man from ice hole
Ren Wei and Li Lin were both graduates of Xingtai No. 28 Middle School, and three years of classmates made them best friends. Last year, Li Lin went to Guo Shoujing High School in Xingtai, while Ren Wei enrolled in the Mechanical Engineering Department of Xingtai Technician College, becoming a vocational school student.
On the noon of February 16, the two agreed to go exercise at Qili River. Around 3:40 pm, not far from them, a man was cycling on the ice from the north bank to the south, unaware of the danger that was about to come.
Yesterday afternoon, Li Lin, lying on the bed in the respiratory department of Xingtai People's Hospital, recalled the scene at the time. "We were playing by the river when suddenly we heard the sound of the ice cracking, 'crack, crack, crack.' When we looked up, the man had already fallen into the river with his bike, struggling in the water." The two quickly ran to rescue him. "Ren Wei was in front and grabbed the man, but the ice was very slippery. I quickly grabbed Ren Wei's hand. Before long, the ice cracked again, and Ren Wei also fell into the river."
Seeing this, Li Lin shouted for help from people nearby. Someone called the police. Li Lin turned his head and saw Ren Wei and the adult struggling in the water. He then lay on the ice and reached out to Ren Wei. The two held hands tightly. Li Lin tried desperately to pull Ren Wei up onto the ice, but unexpectedly, the ice beneath him also cracked, and he fell into the icy river. After a moment of panic, Li Lin clung to a large floating piece of ice nearby.
Three special police officers launch a major ice rescue
At 3:45 pm on the 16th, Zhu Kai, Yue Dandong, and Yang Wenqian of the special police unit 05 of Xingtai City, who were patrolling near Qili River, received instructions from the command center: someone had fallen into an ice hole in Qili River, and they were to proceed to the scene immediately for rescue.
The three special police officers split into two groups: Zhu Kai and Yue Dandong were responsible for going onto the ice to rescue the people, while Yang Wenqian was responsible for receiving the rescued individuals and guiding the surrounding crowd. The life-saving operation began. Zhu Kai and Yue Dandong immediately took off their clothes, stripped to the waist, and regardless of the bitter cold wind and personal safety, carried the vehicle's lifebuoy and went into the river to save people. When Zhu Kai and Yue Dandong reached the edge of the ice hole, the boy in the water was almost frozen stiff. Zhu Kai tried to pull the boy up onto the ice, but at that moment, the ice cracked, making rescue difficult.
Subsequently, Yue Dandong first handed the lifebuoy to the drowning boy to keep him afloat on the water, and the two special police officers pulled the boy upward with force. At this time, the icy river water began to surge up onto the ice surface. Zhu Kai and Yue Dandong’s thermal pants were completely soaked. The two exerted all their strength and finally pulled the boy up onto the ice. The rescued boy was Li Lin, one of the students involved in the rescue.
Meanwhile, police officers from the Qilihe Sub-bureau, firefighters, 120 medical personnel, and others also arrived at the scene. The special police officers first sent Li Lin to the ambulance, then joined forces with the firefighters to continue the rescue of the other two people in the water. A few minutes later, Ren Wei and the man were found, but both had already lost signs of life.

Ren Wei’s home is a tube-shaped building built in the 1970s — the dormitory building of the Tractor Factory in Qiaodong District, Xingtai — in a room of just over 10 square meters with no decent furniture. Ren Wei’s father is laid off and has no stable job, while his mother is a temporary worker at the Xingtai City Sanitation Department, making life quite difficult.
To take care of his grandmother more conveniently, Ren Wei had long been living at her home. Whenever he stayed there, Ren Wei would boil hot water to wash his grandmother’s feet. His nearly 80-year-old grandmother still does not know the tragic news of her grandson’s death. On the night of the incident, the grandmother asked, "Why didn’t Xiao Wei come back?" Ren Wei’s parents, enduring their grief, lied and said that Ren Wei was staying at a classmate’s house.
Yesterday afternoon, Chai Guanjing, Secretary of the Xingtai Municipal Political and Legal Affairs Committee, along with relevant officials from Qiaodong District of Xingtai, the Xingtai Education Bureau, and others, visited Ren Wei’s home. They awarded Ren Wei the honorary title of "Model of Righteousness and Bravery in Xingtai City" and presented the 10,000 yuan bonus to Ren Wei’s parents. Chai Guanjing instructed relevant departments to help the family overcome their difficulties. Liu Jinzhong, Director of the Xingtai Education Bureau, stated that a citywide learning campaign in the education system would be launched to honor the models of righteousness and bravery, Ren Wei and Li Lin.
