The former residence of Ge Gongzhen is a cultural tourism attraction.

The former residence of Ge Gongzhen is located at No. 9 Lanxiang Lane in Dongtai City. It is a typical Qing Dynasty residential building, constructed with brick and wood, featuring three courtyards and twelve rooms, a floral wall decorated with a “longevity” (shou) character pattern, six-sided wooden paneling, and lattice doors and windows. Covering a total area of 247 square meters, with a built-up area of 190 square meters. The “Ge Gongzhen Memorial Hall,” whose plaque was inscribed by Zhou Weizhi, is established within the residence.

Ge Gongzhen was a renowned journalist in China during the 1930s, a pioneer in the study of Chinese journalism history, and an early journalism educator in China. His given name was Shaofa, courtesy name Chunting. He was born in 1890 during the 16th year of the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty into a family of “scholarly lineage” in Taicheng, Dongtai. Gifted and studious from a young age, he began working at the Dongtai Daily in 1912. In the winter of 1913, he became an apprentice in the art department of Shanghai’s Youzheng Bookstore. The following year, he was transferred to the department of the Times newspaper, initially serving as a proofreader and assistant editor before eventually rising to the position of chief editor. He worked at the Times for a total of fifteen years.

To commemorate Mr. Ge Gongzhen, the Jiangsu Journalism Society established the “Ge Gongzhen Journalism Award,” which is the highest honor in the province’s journalism industry. A TV drama titled “Ge Gongzhen” was also produced, receiving public acclaim and awards after its release. The former residence of Ge Gongzhen has been designated as a Jiangsu Provincial Patriotic Education Base and a Yancheng Municipal-level Cultural Relics Protection Unit, and it is open to the public year-round.

Ge Gongzhen (November 27, 1890 – October 22, 1935), given name Shaofa, courtesy name Chunting, was a native of Dongtai City, Jiangsu Province. He was a famous modern Chinese journalism scholar, a prominent journalist of the 1930s, and a pioneer in the study of Chinese journalism history.

Ge Gongzhen’s work, “A History of Chinese Journalism,” was the first to discuss the history of journalism in China. It is the earliest comprehensive treatise on journalism in China and pioneered the systematic study of the development of Chinese journalism. It has become an important document in the research of China’s intellectual and cultural history.
