Dongtai City Museum

Dongtai City Museum is a local comprehensive public welfare institution fully funded by the government, under the administration of the Dongtai Municipal Bureau of Culture, Radio, Television, Press and Publication. The museum was first established in 1958 and rebuilt in 1986. Its current location is within the Dongtai City Historical and Cultural Expo Hall. The museum also manages the daily opening and operations of the Historical and Cultural Expo Hall, the Ge Gongzhen Memorial Hall, the Zhou Weizhi & Wang Kun Art Museum, the Zhang Jian Memorial Hall, and the Huang Yifeng Former Residence.

The “Ge Gongzhen Former Residence,” managed by Dongtai City Museum, was approved as a Jiangsu Provincial Patriotic Education Base by the Jiangsu Provincial Party Committee Propaganda Department in 1997. The “Zhou Weizhi & Wang Kun Art Museum,” also under its management, was designated as a Dongtai City Patriotic Education Base by the Yancheng Municipal Party Committee Propaganda Department in 2010. Both of these public cultural facilities are open to the public free of charge year-round. They maintain regular activities, a pleasant environment, sound systems, and high-quality services, making them especially popular among visitors, particularly young people. The number of visitors has been increasing year by year. These sites have been recognized by the municipal government as a Four-Star Civilized Service Window and named an AA-level Tourist Attraction by the National Tourism Administration.

The Historical and Cultural Expo Hall is located in the East Pavilion of the Urban Exhibition Hall at Civic Square. Constructed in 2010, it covers an area of approximately 16,000 square meters, with a building area of 8,000 square meters and a total exhibition area of 3,100 square meters. The exhibitions primarily focus on the distinctive culture and history of Dongtai. The first floor features the Dongtai Cultural and Artistic Brand Exhibition, showcasing three “Hometowns of Art”: China’s Hometown of Hair Embroidery, China’s Hometown of Calligraphy and Painting, and China’s Hometown of Children’s Erhu Art. The second and third floors host the Dongtai Historical and Cultural Exhibition themed “Sea Rhyme and Salt Soul.” This exhibition presents 5,000 years of Dongtai’s civilization, using salt culture as the main thread to highlight the wisdom, openness, inclusiveness, and indomitable human spirit forged by Dongtai’s ancestors in their struggle against nature. The museum adheres to the curatorial principles of authenticity in content, beauty in artistry, and innovation in presentation. It employs a variety of methods—including texts, images, cultural relics, sound, light, and electronic controls—to provide a comprehensive, multi-dimensional, and ultra-wide-angle showcase of Dongtai’s history and culture. The large relief sculpture in the lobby, standing 10 meters high and 6 meters wide, is currently the largest indoor relief in the province. The ancient sea salt production process scene on the second floor is the only one of its kind in China. The unique charm of the Hair Embroidery and Children’s Erhu Art Hometowns, the distinctive contributions of the Enlightenment thinker Wang Gen, and the distinctive ambiance of Ming and Qing dynasty Dongtai urban life offer diverse forms and numerous highlights.
