East China University of Political Science and Law

East China University of Political Science and Law is one of the first higher political and legal institutions established in New China. In June 1952, approved by the East China Military and Political Committee, the law, political science, and social science departments of nine universities — St. John’s University, Fudan University, Nanjing University, Soochow University, Xiamen University, Hujiang University, Anhui University, Shanghai College, and Aurora University — merged and were re-established on the former site of St. John’s University as East China College of Politics and Law. In 1958, the school was incorporated into the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences; it was re-established in 1963 and began enrolling students the following year; enrollment was suspended in 1966 and the school was disbanded in 1972. In March 1979, with the approval of the State Council, it reopened for the second time. In March 2007, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, the school was renamed East China University of Political Science and Law. The university is administered by the Shanghai municipal government. The current Party Committee Secretary is Professor Cao Wenze, and the President is Professor Ye Qing.

Over the years, ECUSL has adhered to its motto of “Diligent Practice for Knowledge, Noble Virtue and Reverence for Law,” and upheld the spirit of “Rising in Adversity, Advancing in Hardship, and Excelling in Glory.” It has developed into a distinctive multi-disciplinary university with a focus on legal studies, along with economics, management, literature, and engineering. It is hailed as the “Pearl of the Orient in Legal Education.”

The university currently has two campuses in Changning and Songjiang, covering an area of over 750,000 square meters. It has more than 18,000 students and over 1,200 faculty members. There are 19 colleges (departments) and more than 160 research institutions. The university offers doctoral and master's degree programs in first-level disciplines such as Law and Public Administration, master's degree programs in first-level disciplines such as Applied Economics, Political Science, and Marxist Theory, as well as 14 doctoral sub-disciplines, 35 master's sub-disciplines, 5 professional master's degree programs, 24 undergraduate majors, and a postdoctoral program in Law. It also has one national key discipline (Legal History), five provincial (ministerial) level key disciplines, two first-class disciplines in Shanghai, and one Shanghai Peak & Plateau Discipline. The university actively promotes the development of think tanks to enhance knowledge innovation and social service capabilities. It serves as the Judicial Research Base for the Pilot Free Trade Zone of the Supreme People’s Court, the Shanghai Legislative Consultation and Service Research Base for Education, the China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone Legal Innovation Research Base, and the Research Base for the Evolution of Legal Civilization under the Shanghai Social Science Innovation Research Base. The Institute of Foreign and Comparative Law, the Research Center for Government System Reform and Regulatory Innovation Legal Safeguards, and the Economic Law and Strategy Research Institute are key humanities and social sciences research bases of Shanghai’s regular higher education institutions. The Social Governance Research Institute is a Shanghai Higher Education Institution Knowledge Service Platform. In the 2012 discipline evaluation by the Academic Degrees & Graduate Education Development Center of the Ministry of Education, the Law discipline ranked among the top five nationally. In the past five years, the university has frequently ranked first nationally in the number of funded projects in legal studies under the National Social Science Fund and the Ministry of Justice, and leads the nation’s political and legal universities in the number of major national-level research projects.
