The 2010 Matsue Castle Festival: enjoy cherry blossoms and explore the castle in traditional costume

A breathtaking cherry blossom spectacle is set to sweep across Japan in a wave of pink, with the first signs of spring blooms appearing from mid-to-late March. Forecasts for cherry blossoms in the San’in and San’yō regions of Honshu predict that the flowers will begin to bloom around March 22 to 26. Among the famous cherry blossom spots in the San’in and San’yō areas, Matsue Castle in Shimane Prefecture captivates flower enthusiasts with its majestic architecture set against the delicate beauty of the blossoms. Cultural events hosted by Kobun Chōya will offer delightful activities, showcasing the charm of the season in picturesque surroundings.

The elegant and imposing Matsue Castle is a landmark of Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture. It was constructed under the direction of the first lord of the castle, who commissioned skilled craftsmen. The black-walled keep, standing 30 meters tall, has steadfastly watched over the prosperous castle town for 400 years. Inside the keep, you can find displays of weapons, armor, and models of Matsue Castle that offer a glimpse into its storied past. The top-floor observation room, also known as the "Tengu Room," offers views of the Matsue cityscape and [?], with [?] visible in all directions.

Like other historic castles, Matsue Castle is also a renowned cherry blossom viewing spot. The romantic spring blossoms soften the castle’s solemn and stately atmosphere, while evening illuminations give the castle a gentle glow, enchanting all visitors. This year’s Matsue Castle Festival will be held as usual from March 27 to April 15. In addition to the beautiful cherry blossoms, special events include traditional costume experiences, historical matchlock gun performances, a Matsue samurai parade, gagaku music performances, regional cultural and performing arts festivals, and the Ansai Festival Newcomers Competition.

After visiting Matsue Castle, don’t miss taking a ride on the Horikawa Sightseeing Boat to admire the best parts of the ancient city from the moat. The waterways surrounding the castle walls are lined with lush greenery, offering a different view at every turn. The canal crosses 31 bridges, and the boatman lowers the canopy as the boat passes under low bridges; some require passengers to crouch down. The picturesque scenery makes the 50-minute boat ride fly by, providing a unique perspective of the castle from the water, distinct from the land experience.
