Crossing from the San'yō region to the San'in region, you’ll arrive in Shimane Prefecture, home to many myths about Japan’s founding. Matsue and Izumo are must-visit hidden gems. Matsue Castle, the city’s landmark, was built by the first lord of the castle, Horio Yoshiharu. It features the grand and majestic architectural style of the early Momoyama period, with its upturned chidori hafu (fish-scale gables) that resemble flying birds—hence its nickname, “Chidori Castle.” Emphasizing defensive military functions, the castle includes numerous ingenious design elements to guard against enemy invasions. The staircase made of paulownia wood is another unique architectural feature of Matsue Castle, making it difficult for invaders to run up swiftly.
