Explore Japan’s National Treasures – East Japan Railway’s FreePass Now on Sale

Tochigi Prefecture, located in the northern part of Japan’s Kanto region, is a world heritage treasure trove, home to well-preserved historical sites such as the Toshogu Shrine dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo Shogunate, Rinnoji Temple, and Nikko Tosho-gu, which are highly cherished by the Japanese, especially during the seasons of cherry blossoms in spring and autumn foliage. From April 26 to the end of November, Tobu Railway is selling a special rail pass, the “Premium Nikko & Kinugawa Tobu Free Pass,” which allows free travel on transportation in the Nikko and Kinugawa area, making it easy for travelers to explore beyond Tokyo.

Nikko in Tochigi Prefecture is renowned worldwide as a UNESCO World Heritage site, home to the Toshogu Shrine, Rinnoji Temple, and Nikko Tosho-gu. Among them, the most magnificent is the Toshogu Shrine, representing the Momoyama culture architectural style, which was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in December 1999. Upon entering the official entrance to the two shrines and one temple, you’ll first come across Rinnoji Temple. Spring is the best time to visit, as the 400-year-old Kongō Sakura (Diamond Cherry Blossom) tree in front of the Sanbutsudo Hall boasts not only dense and robust blossoms but also an expanded floral coverage. Standing at the steps of the Sanbutsudo, the Kongō Sakura blooms vibrantly, creating a striking contrast with the serene and reserved atmosphere of the temple.

Additionally, Chuzenji Lake and Kegon Falls are must-visit spots in Nikko. You can take a sightseeing cruise on Chuzenji Lake to enjoy the beautiful lake and mountain scenery. Not far from the Chuzenji Lake bus stop, Kegon Falls cascades down from a 99-meter-high cliff, creating an exceptionally powerful spectacle. It is recommended to start your Nikko trip by admiring the fairytale-like beauty of Chuzenji Lake and the majestic Kegon Falls, then take a bus to the historic sacred site of the two shrines and one temple, and finally visit century-old shops in downtown Nikko to pick up some travel souvenirs.

The special rail pass “Premium Nikko & Kinugawa Tobu Free Pass” sold by Tobu Railway includes a round-trip ticket from the starting station to Tobu Nikko and Yumoto Onsen, a round-trip SPACIA limited express ticket from Asakusa, Kita-Senju, or Kasukabe, as well as free rides on local buses within the valid area, the Chuzenji Lake cruise boat, and the Akechidaira Ropeway. The pass is available from April 26 and is valid for five days. The price of the pass starting from Asakusa ranges from 7,860 to 8,500 yen and can be purchased at any Tobu Travel branch.
