Liuyun Chan Temple

Liuyun Chan Temple is a cultural tourism attraction.

Liuyun Chan Temple is located in Nanxiang Town, Jiading District, Shanghai. Fifteen hundred years ago during the Northern and Southern Dynasties, a farmer digging in his field unearthed a huge square stone measuring ten feet on each side. Soon after, two immortal cranes flew down and perched on it. A monk named Deqi witnessed this and believed the spot to be a “sacred Buddhist site,” so he rode the cranes every day to beg for alms and raise funds. He built Baihe Nanxiang Temple there, which enjoyed great popularity at the time. The town of Nanxiang eventually grew up around the temple. Later, Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty bestowed upon it the name “Yunxiang Temple,” and so it was renamed. Over the centuries, Yunxiang Temple rose and fell several times, and today only two brick pagodas remain.
