The Shanghai Auto Museum serves as a science education base and a patriotic education base.

The Shanghai Auto Museum is one of the key cultural projects under construction in Shanghai. Through showcasing the development of automobiles, the museum displays precious historic vehicles, legendary figures, and technological evolution.

The museum is situated in the Expo Park of the Shanghai International Automobile City, covering a land area of 11,700 square meters, with a building area of 27,985 square meters and a height of 32.45 meters. The total project investment is approximately 400 million RMB. The site’s architectural design was completed by Germany’s IFB company, featuring a structure with numerous flowing curves. From the outside, it resembles stacked books, symbolizing the museum's knowledge-rich and culturally refined character.

The functional layout of the museum’s exhibition space is divided into five sections: the History Hall, Technology Hall, Brand Hall, Classic Car Hall, and Temporary Exhibition Hall, with a total exhibition area of about 10,000 square meters. The museum’s exhibition construction will be carried out in two phases. Phase one includes the History Hall and Classic Car Hall; phase two will complete the Technology Hall and Brand Hall. Phase one was officially completed and opened to the public on October 24, 2006.

The History Hall is located on the first floor of the museum. It reflects the significant impact of automobiles on human societal development by showcasing the global history of automotive progress. The hall integrates various important stages of automotive development into several themed exhibition areas: the Preface Hall, Exploration and Birth, Practicality and Mass Production, Diversity and Brilliance, Fashion and Streamlining, Sports and Driving, Energy Efficiency and Electronics, and China’s Automotive Industry.

The Classic Car Hall is located on the second floor of the museum and serves as an important supplement to the first-floor History Hall. This exhibition space features display vehicles provided by the Blackhawk Auto Museum in the United States. Through the concentrated presentation of classic models, it introduces visitors to the key characteristics of different periods in automotive history.

Phase two will add the Technology Hall and Brand Hall, while relocating the Classic Car Hall to the fourth floor. The Technology Hall is situated on the second floor of the Expo Museum and is divided into eight themed exhibition areas: Structure, Design, Manufacturing, Materials, Safety, Comfort, Electronics, and Energy. As automobiles have become carriers of new industrial technologies in modern industry, the Technology Hall’s exhibition design emphasizes this concept. From the visitor’s perspective, the hall highlights interactivity and participation, allowing guests to experience the human ingenuity embedded in automobiles and feel the enthusiasm driving technological advancement.

The Brand Hall is located on the third floor of the museum and consists of several brand-specific exhibition spaces, where renowned domestic and international car manufacturers each present their brand’s history and culture, enabling visitors to experience the unique essence of different brands.

The Temporary Exhibition Hall is located on the first floor of the museum and is used for hosting a variety of thematic temporary exhibitions.
