Jiading Bamboo Carving Museum

The Jiading Bamboo Carving Museum is located within Jiading Villa in the Zhongqiao Historical and Cultural Preservation Area of Jiading District, Shanghai. The exhibition hall covers an area of approximately 500 square meters. Among the 120 exhibits, some are from the Shanghai Museum, some from the Jiading Museum, and others from private collections. Aside from a small number of pieces from the Ming Dynasty, most are artistic masterpieces from the Qing Dynasty. The museum uses new technologies such as “holographic imaging” to interpret the three-dimensional effects of Jiading bamboo carving masterpieces through floating, all-round stereoscopic displays. It also pioneered a method of using flower mud for controlled regulation to ensure the safety of the cultural relics on display.

The museum was officially completed and opened to the public free of charge at the end of 2007. Currently, the Jiading Bamboo Carving Museum exhibits both its collection of fine Jiading bamboo carvings and contemporary works by local bamboo carving artists. In conjunction with various promotional and cultural events, it holds irregular exhibitions of bamboo carving artworks. It serves as a platform for bamboo carving artists from all walks of life to exchange ideas. In 2006, Jiading bamboo carving was included in the first batch of National Intangible Cultural Heritage lists announced by the State Council. Originating in the mid-to-late Ming Dynasty and pioneered by three generations of the Zhu family, Jiading bamboo carving uses bamboo as a medium to integrate calligraphy, painting, poetry, literature, and seal engraving, breathing new life into the material.
