Jiading Wisteria Garden

Jiading Wisteria Garden is located by the moat on Bole Road in the northwest suburbs of Shanghai’s Jiading District. It was established to commemorate the 10th anniversary of friendly exchanges and the 5th anniversary of the establishment of sister-city relations between Jiading District and Wake Town, Okayama Prefecture, Japan. The park was constructed in September 1997, opened to the public in May 1999, and held its opening ceremony on April 22, 2000. The layout of the Wisteria Garden features both the charm of traditional Chinese garden landscapes and certain aspects of Japanese garden styles.

The garden covers an area of over 10,000 square meters and is home to more than 100 high-quality wisteria plants of various species. The flowers are large and vibrant, blooming in shades of purple, red, pink, light yellow, and pure white. The flower clusters typically range from 80 to 140 centimeters in length, with the longest exceeding 150 centimeters. All 100+ wisteria varieties in the garden were generously donated by Mr. Fujimoto Michio, former mayor of Wake Town, Okayama Prefecture, Japan. Every year, Mr. Fujimoto personally travels from Japan at his own expense to provide technical guidance on the cultivation and pruning of the wisteria. The garden’s wisteria trellises were donated by Mr. Tokunaga Shinji, president of Tokunaga Koi no Hata Company from Wake Town (a donation of 2 million Japanese yen in 1997).

The garden features water bodies, rockeries, small bridges, pavilions, trellises, and stone lanterns. Water covers nearly 2,000 square meters of the garden, with trellises spanning 1,500 square meters, lawns covering 1,300 square meters, and wooded areas spanning over 2,000 square meters. The plantings mainly consist of spring-flowering shrubs, including Japanese cherry blossoms (also donated by Mr. Fujimoto Michio), as well as Chinese species such as magnolia, azalea, red maple, and crabapple. Popular trees among visitors, such as osmanthus, wintersweet, ginkgo, and zelkova, are also planted, giving the entire garden a natural, lively, and diverse appearance. Thanks to the joint efforts of both China and Japan, every late April the garden bursts into a profusion of fragrant purple wisteria blooms that captivate visitors.

Within Jiading District, take bus routes 4, 6, or 11 and get off at the intersection of Bole Road and Jinsha Road.

Take Metro Line 11 to Jiading West Station, then transfer to Jiading Route 11 and get off at Bole Road Jinsha Road Station.
