Ancient Trees Park

Near the Xiaohékǒu area of Jiading’s West Gate, there is a cluster of 10 ancient ginkgo trees, each around 200 years old, standing 19.3 to 20.4 meters tall. The thickest tree has a girth of 2.45 meters, and the group covers an area of over 600 square meters. To protect this rare cluster of ancient ginkgos, the Jiading District Government invested over 7 million yuan, relocating residents and businesses around the trees, and built a 5,000-square-meter Ancient Trees Park centered around them. The park is mainly landscaped with plants—since ginkgos are highly sensitive to waterlogging, drought-resistant plants were chosen for the surroundings. The ground is paved with blue bricks to ensure the roots have proper ventilation. To the south of the ginkgo cluster, a winding corridor, flower hall, pavilions, flower stands, and a yellow-stone rockery were added, creating a serene and classic aesthetic. The “Shanghai Tree King” within the park—an ancient male ginkgo ranked No. 1 among Shanghai’s heritage trees—is 1,200 years old, 24.5 meters tall, with a girth of 6.5 meters and a crown diameter of 20 meters. Its root system spans several acres.
