The West City Wall

The West City Wall is a Shanghai Municipal Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

The West City Wall is located at the western end of Renmin Street in Jiading Town and dates back to the Yuan Dynasty.

Built during the Southern Song Dynasty (1219) and with a history of nearly 800 years, the West City Wall is divided into northern and southern sections by Renmin Street. The northern section starts at the Xichenghe Bridge on Qinghe Road to the north. The western end of this section of the ancient wall is right next to the windows of residential buildings, standing about ten meters high (level with the third floor); after restoration, there is a raised platform extending outward from the wall — an enemy tower with battlements — used for defending against attackers. Further south along the wall, there is also a modern electronic fence for theft prevention. This section of the West City Wall is the most intact and longest (several dozen meters) part of the ancient Jiading city walls. It is fronted by green space and a waterside platform, making it the best spot to view the Jiading ancient city wall.

In 2014, the West City Wall was upgraded to a municipal-level cultural relics protection unit.

Construction control zone: East, South, North: same as the protected area. West: 10 meters west of the Huancheng River.

Jiading Town Subdistrict: Before the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, an ancient coastline formed at the mouth of the Yangtze River, and human activity was already present along the Lianqi River (now the area around West Gate Old Street). By the Liang Dynasty's Tianjian era (502–519), a settlement had formed. During the Tang Dynasty, the ancient town of Jiading was named after the Lianqi River and called Lianqi Market. On the ninth day of the twelfth month of the tenth year of the Jiading era in the Southern Song Dynasty (January 7, 1218), the county seat was established and named Jiading after the reign title, a name that has continued to this day. In September 2000, Jiading Town was restructured from a town into a subdistrict.
