Minhang Sports Park

Minhang Sports Park is a national AAA-level tourist attraction.

Minhang Sports Park is a five-star park located on the western side of Shanghai’s Outer Ring Road, at the junction of Xinzhuang Town and Qibao Town. There are direct buses from Xinzhuang Metro Station. It is approximately 20 kilometers from the city center. It is the first sports-themed park in Shanghai and also the city’s first large-scale urban theme park. The site where the park now stands was originally an abandoned construction waste dump. In order to improve the regional ecological environment, promote sustainable development, and create a green urban forest, the Minhang District Committee and District Government decided to transform it into a large-scale open park. Construction of the park began in November 2001 and it was completed and opened to the public in January 2004.

In 1980, approved by the Municipal Basic Construction Committee, with the overall planning and landscaping design by the Municipal Gardens Administration Design Office, the Minhang District Gardens Management Office organized the construction. Work began in October 1985 and was completed in September 1988, opening to the public on October 1 of the same year. During the park’s construction, leaders of the Shanghai Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government led government officials to participate in tree planting labor at the park, and Comrade [Name Redacted] inscribed the park’s name.

The total area of Minhang Sports Park is about 1,260 mu, including 200 mu for sports venues, 244 mu for Tropical Storm, and 40 mu for the Youth Activity Center. The total investment budget for the park was 570 million yuan, including 250 million yuan for relocation and land acquisition, 210 million yuan for sports venue construction, and 110 million yuan for park construction.

The park construction involved the relocation of 19 factories, 320 rural residential households, as well as the relocation of two high-voltage power lines (10,000V and 35,000V) running through the park, television cables, water pipelines, telephone lines, etc. All high-voltage lines along Xinzhen Road and Nongnan Road were placed underground.

The earthwork for the park was balanced on-site, especially making full use of the original garbage mountain. This not only reduced the amount of spoil needing transport during construction but also added a 26-meter-high mountainous forest landscape to the park. To ensure the safety of modifying the garbage mountain, a landfill technical plan was developed, and soil engineering hydraulic pressure tests were conducted. A mixing pile cut-off wall was added along the riverbank side, solving a series of issues such as mountain displacement and pollution of water bodies by garbage leachate.

The park features 18 uniquely styled bridges and culverts. The water landscapes within the park are connected to the river network, and a 100-mu lake has been built inside the park, equipped with water quality regulation facilities. The original 100-meter forest belt was entirely restructured, with additional facilities added to enhance functionality, forming an integrated sports park.

The park includes arched corridors, large rockeries and potted plants, monkey hills, lotus ponds, mushroom pavilions, and rock formations. It uses tall trees, seasonal flowers, and varying-height hedges to divide spaces. The western part of the park is designated for activity areas, while the eastern section features earthen mounds, dense woods, lawns, flower paths, streams, and fishponds. In the northeast corner of the park lies a formal flowerbed complex totaling 3,300 square meters, planted with various colors of roses. The eastern part of the park also has a monkey house; visitors can go up to the second-floor viewing platform to watch the monkeys on the monkey hill.

The park's activity area is equipped with children's amusement facilities such as bumper cars, mini trains, electric cars, ball pits, rocking horses, horse-drawn carts, overhead planes, and racing cars.

The park is one of the first in Shanghai to offer free admission. It has been awarded titles such as Shanghai Double-Excellence Park and Shanghai “Seven Nos” Civilized Park.

The park’s design and construction follow the principles of “adapting to local conditions, putting people first, and returning to nature,” creating an ecological and human-friendly space environment that reflects the spirit of the times. It features a Sports Venue Area, Tropical Storm Water Park, Youth Activity Center, and 10 scenic zones: Fountain Tree-lined Boulevard Zone, Viewing Lawn Zone, Jade Forest Mountain Zone, Pebble Stream Zone, Wetland Ecology Zone, Music Sculpture Plaza Zone, Scenic Lake Zone, Southern Charm Zone, Colorful Central Plaza Zone, Hundred Trees Zone, and Thousand-Meter Tree Belt Zone. It also offers sports and leisure facilities such as hillside long slides, mini golf courses, fitness gardens, children’s playgrounds, children’s bicycles, yachts, and fishing spots.
