The No. 7 Caoxiang Road Liberation War Memorial consists of the Heroes Monument and the mother-and-son bunkers. In May 1949, on the eve of Shanghai’s liberation, soldiers of the 4th Battalion of a unit from the 81st Division — one of the vanguard forces of the People’s Liberation Army — engaged in fierce combat with the Nationalist troops of Tang Enbo entrenched in the mother-and-son bunkers at No. 7 Bridge. After three days and nights of heroic fighting, our army finally breached the enemy’s defenses, opening the western gate to the liberation of Shanghai. The No. 7 Bridge bunker has since become a historic witness to this battle. The memorial, covering nearly 100 square meters, displays an introduction to the Battle of Shanghai’s Liberation. Admission is free for group visits by local citizens.
