Former Site of Shanghai Puci Sanatorium

The former site of Shanghai Puci Sanatorium is a protected cultural heritage site of Shanghai.

The former site of Shanghai Puci Sanatorium is located at No. 3210 Humin Road. Established in 1935, the Shanghai Mental Health Center was originally founded as the Shanghai Puci Sanatorium, later becoming the Shanghai Municipal Psychiatric Hospital. It was funded by philanthropist Lu Bohong and managed by the church, and was one of the largest and best-equipped psychiatric specialty hospitals in the Far East at the time. The hospital covered an area of about 100 acres, with a construction area of approximately 30,000 square meters.

After 1949, it was renamed the Beiqiao Branch of Shanghai Psychiatric Prevention and Treatment General Hospital.

Through decades of development, the Shanghai Mental Health Center has now become a top-tier, Class A tertiary specialized psychiatric hospital in Shanghai. It undertakes medical treatment, teaching, research, prevention, rehabilitation, psychological counseling/treatment, and international academic exchanges related to mental health across the city. It is the largest mental health institution in China, with the most comprehensive range of services and the highest number of leading disciplines.

In May 2006, the Shanghai Mental Health Center became an affiliated hospital of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine.

On April 4, 2014, the Shanghai Municipal People's Government officially designated and announced the former site of Shanghai Puci Sanatorium as a protected cultural heritage site of Shanghai (Document No. Hu Fu Fa [2014] No. 29).
