Dunhua Jade Buddha Garden

The Jade Buddha Garden is situated in a naturally formed circular valley on the southern shore of Holy Lotus Lake, covering an area of 30,000 square meters. It boasts a magnificent and resplendent presence. The garden features a three-tiered pavilion-tower structure: the first level houses the Jade Buddha Hall, the second level is the Ten Thousand Buddhas Pavilion, and the top level is a stupa used to enshrine Buddhist relics. The stupa's roof is round and adorned with 18 hanging Dharma bells, the body is shaped like a precious gourd, encircled at the waist with three tiers of 108 small golden lotus flowers, and the base is surrounded by white railings with 18 large lotus flowers stacked on top. The entire stupa appears as if upheld by lotuses, and when the breeze blows, the sounds of Buddhist chants seem to fill the air. The Jade Buddha Hall is an architectural masterpiece, with its overall design seamlessly integrated and exquisitely crafted — a unique creation in the world. Now let’s head up to visit the Jade Buddha Garden. You can carefully count the steps underfoot — there are 52 in total, symbolizing the 52 stages one must go through from being a human to attaining Buddhahood.

After ascending the steps, you will arrive at the Cloud Terrace Plaza, flanked by two rows of eight exquisitely carved Qing Dynasty stone virtue pillars depicting the “Eight Divinities of the Heavens.” Inside the Jade Buddha Hall is enshrined a 7.6-meter-long, 32-ton reclining statue of Sakyamuni in the Parinirvana pose, meticulously carved from a single piece of Burmese jade. On the head, back, and foot sides of the reclining Buddha are standing statues of the Ten Great Disciples, each over two meters tall and also made of Burmese jade. In the Ten Thousand Buddhas Pavilion, you can see a three-dimensional 360-degree circular “Amitabha” formation resembling a city of Buddhas, housing 10,080 niches, each enshrining a seated Burmese jade Buddha. On September 6, 2007, on the day of the consecration ceremony of the Jade Buddha Garden, an unprecedented crowd gathered. Devotees and monks came from as far away as Shanghai and Guangzhou, and as nearby as Harbin and Changchun. Some had waited overnight at Liuding Mountain, while others arrived in the middle of the night at the foot of the mountain, eagerly awaiting the morning bell and the opening of the mountain gate. It was described as “a tidal wave of people never before seen around the Zhengjue Temple at Liuding Mountain.”
