Golden Pagoda Grand Buddha

The Golden Pagoda Grand Buddha is located in Northeast Asia and is a bronze open-air seated statue of Shakyamuni. The construction of the Golden Pagoda Grand Buddha was initiated and it was consecrated in 0, filling the gap of having no open-air grand Buddha statue in Northeast China and completing the Buddhist geographical pattern of the Six Directions and Six Buddhas in China.

The Buddha stands 48 meters tall from the lotus pedestal, symbolizing the birthday of Shakyamuni on the eighth day of the fourth lunar month; the body of the Buddha itself is 38.4 meters high, where “3” represents the “Three Bodies of the Buddha,” namely the Dharma Body, the Reward Body, and the Response Body; “8” represents the “Eightfold Path to Enlightenment”; and “4” represents the “Four Noble Truths.” The lotus pedestal is 9.6 meters high, where “9” represents the “Nine Realms of Existence”; “6” represents the “Six Perfections”; the lotus has four tiers, representing the “Four Elements”; there are 80 lotus petals, symbolizing the Buddha’s “Eighty Auspicious Marks”; the diameter of the lotus is 32 meters, representing the Buddha’s “Thirty-two Marks of Excellence.” The Golden Pagoda Grand Buddha was manufactured by Nanjing Aerospace Chen Guang Limited Group. The foundation stone was laid on May 20, 2009, and the consecration ceremony was held on September 23, 2011. The Buddha statue used a total of 500 tons of copper, assembled from 1,046 copper plates—646 for the Buddha’s body and 400 for the lotus pedestal.

The Buddha’s right hand is raised upward in a pushing gesture, performing the “Fearless Mudra,” symbolizing fearlessness, safeguarding the sacred land, and proclaiming inviolability; the left hand extends downward in a supportive gesture, performing the “Wish-Fulfilling Mudra,” symbolizing boundless compassion and blessings for national peace, people’s safety, and social harmony. The Buddha’s eyes are also the most uniquely designed part of the entire statue—no matter from which direction you look at the Buddha, it appears to be looking back at you. This also signifies the Buddha’s encouragement for people to do more good deeds. By worshipping the Golden Pagoda Grand Buddha, one may attain longevity across nine lifetimes, accumulate wealth and silver across nine lifetimes, enjoy prosperous fortune across nine lifetimes, live in familial harmony across nine lifetimes, be blessed with nine lifetimes of auspiciousness, and now everyone might as well walk around the Buddha once to pray for the Buddha’s protection.
