The Remains of Ao Dong City in Dunhua

The Remains of Ao Dong City in Dunhua is a cultural relic protection unit of Jilin Province.

Ao Dong City is located in the southeastern part of Dunhua city proper, about 500 meters south of the Mudan River, and is a provincial-level cultural relic protection unit in Jilin Province.

Also known as Huhanguo City, Edoli City, Akekedun City, or Eodori City, Ao Dong City was an early capital of the Bohai Kingdom. The original appearance of Ao Dong City has been completely lost, with only remnants including a 252-meter section of the outer city’s southern wall and a 190-meter section of the outer city’s western wall.

The city walls were built from earth and consisted of inner and outer sections. The inner city was square-shaped, while the outer city was rectangular. To the west, there was a road leading to Fuyu Prefecture (present-day Nong’an area), and to the east, a thoroughfare connected to Eastern Capital City.

Located in the southeastern part of Dunhua city proper on the northern bank of the Mudan River. The city was square-shaped, divided into inner and outer sections. The inner city was square with sides 80 meters long, and the outer city had a perimeter of four li. Currently, only a 252-meter section of the southern wall and a 190-meter section of the western wall remain, with the rest lost. Artifacts unearthed within the city include bronze coins, stone mortars, pottery, iron pots, and cart axles, all bearing distinct early Bohai characteristics. This site is considered an important early settlement of the Bohai Kingdom.
