Ancient Tombs of the Bohai Kingdom

The Ancient Tombs of the Bohai Kingdom is a cultural tourism attraction.

The Ancient Tombs of the Bohai Kingdom are located in Liuding Mountain in the northwest part of the scenic area and are among the Major Historical and Cultural Sites Protected at the National Level as designated by the State Council. In 698 AD, the leader of the Sumo Mohe tribe established the kingdom of Zhen in Dunhua, which was later conferred the title of Prince of Bohai by Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty. The kingdom lasted for over two hundred years, reaching its peak with “five capitals, fifteen prefectures, and sixty-two counties,” covering vast territories and maintaining close ties with countries such as Goguryeo and Japan, historically known as the “Prosperous Kingdom of the East Sea.”

The Bohai Kingdom established its capital in Dunhua for 57 years. In addition to the ancient tombs, other relics such as the Dongmushan City and the Twenty-Four Stone Blocks of the Bohai Kingdom remain. As the mausoleum of the early royal nobility of the Bohai Kingdom, the Liuding Mountain Ancient Tomb Complex features simple yet ancient architecture that blends seamlessly with the mountain’s topography. The complex includes two burial areas with over a hundred tombs of various sizes. Among them, the stone lions and epitaphs excavated from the tomb of Princess Zhenhui are the most precious, providing strong direct evidence for the study of the history and culture of the Bohai Kingdom and resolving many unresolved issues in Bohai historical research. Currently, the tomb complex has been included in China’s tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage Site nomination. To promote the history and culture of the Prosperous Kingdom of the East Sea, Dunhua has built the magnificent Haidong Eagle scenic entrance gate at the entrance of the site, which is currently the largest tourist attraction gate in Northeast China. According to the plan, a Bohai Culture Museum will also be constructed within the scenic area.
