The Sacred Lotus Pond is like a radiant pearl inlaid within the entire scenic area, offering a marvelous ecological landscape. When the lotus flowers are in full bloom, they are elegantly arranged, simple yet graceful, filling the air with their fragrant aroma and bringing tranquility to the heart and mind. As the poem goes: “The lotus, delicate as if about to speak, smiles as it enters the mallard’s cove.” Why does Buddhism hold the lotus in such high esteem? Why do lotuses bloom abundantly at the foot of the Great Buddha?

Legend has it that Lady Lotus, the deer mother, left a beautiful lotus blossom on the ground with every step she took. She gave birth to five hundred handsome and strong boys in a single birth, all of whom were heroic protectors of the nation. On the other hand, the character and qualities of the lotus align with Buddhist teachings — that is, the journey from the mundane world to the pure realm, from evil to perfect goodness, from the ordinary to enlightenment, is just like the lotus, which grows out of the mud yet remains untainted and transcendent, preserving its purity and fragrance. The heavenly king who saved the world was born seated upon a thousand-petaled golden precious lotus. Shakyamuni Buddha, Amitabha Buddha, and Guanyin Bodhisattva are all depicted seated upon or holding a lotus, symbolizing that the Buddha emerges from the worldly realm yet remains pure and unstained — the “lotus among people.”
