Dalian People's Square

Situated in Xigang District, Dalian, the square spans a total area of 125,000 square meters, including 40,000 square meters of lawn. It functions as the administrative and judicial hub of Dalian, hosting the Dalian Municipal People's Government, courts, and procuratorate. The square is a centralized urban plaza for municipal administrative departments, featuring a symmetrical layout centered around an axis formed by the Soviet Martyrs' Memorial Tower to the north and the Municipal Government Building to the south. Zhongshan Road runs vertically through the middle of the square, intersecting this north-south axis. To the south of Zhongshan Road, the Soviet Martyrs' Memorial Tower is the focal point, flanked on both sides by two completely symmetrical formal gardens. A strip of green space serves as a buffer between the tower and the gardens. The central part of the square is divided into four large lawns, each covering four hectares, lush with green grass where pigeons stroll leisurely, set against a vibrant display of colorful flowers that create a delightful visual experience.

Viewed from above, the square has a square-shaped layout, which distinguishes it from other squares in Dalian. Covering a total area of 120,000 square meters, prior to 1993 the square was known as "Stalin Square" and featured a Soviet Martyrs' Memorial Tower. In April 1999, the memorial tower was relocated to the Lushun Soviet Martyrs' Cemetery. The former site of the tower has since been replaced with a European-style colonnade, in front of which a musical fountain has been built. The fountain, with a total of 2,000 nozzles along its 1,100-meter length, consists of 72 small splash pools and operates punctually at 12:00, 19:00, 20:00, and 21:00. Visitors resting in the colonnade momentarily escape the hustle and bustle of the city, engaging in meditation, reading, or enjoying the dynamic interplay of the fountain and the pigeons. As night falls, the fountain is at its most enchanting. Classical world-famous melodies play in the square, and the water jets dance in rhythm to the music, illuminated by colorful lights, creating the illusion of a graceful dancing maiden. In front of the fountain stands a flag-raising platform measuring 9.9 square meters, symbolizing the centennial founding of Dalian in 1999. The flagpole is 26 meters tall. The flag is raised daily at sunrise. As the morning mist begins to lift and the sun reddens the horizon, accompanied by the national anthem, the dignified flag guards raise the flag vigorously into the sky. The red flag slowly ascends, appearing particularly vivid against the green lawn and morning sunlight. To the north of the square is the Dalian Municipal People's Government, to the northwest is the Dalian Intermediate People's Court, and to the northeast is the Dalian Municipal [agency name missing]. These are all classic European-style buildings. The classical architecture adds a sense of solemnity and dignity to the square, which serves as Dalian’s administrative and judicial center. The four large green spaces further invigorate this century-old plaza.

On Zhongshan Road, which cuts through the center of the square, the graceful female traffic police are the most beautiful sight along the road. Their elegant figures and precise, commanding gestures present a city image that balances strength and grace. The elegant female mounted police are another highlight of the square. The horses, moving with the noble grace of dressage, pace gracefully across the square, while the policewomen, dashing and smiling, cheerfully take photos with visitors. The horses originally used when the mounted police was first established were purebred and high-quality steeds imported from Europe. Later, moved by the meticulous care and respectful treatment of the horses in Dalian, the chairman of the Hong Kong Jockey Club decided to donate a group of world-class racehorses that had contributed significantly to the sport. While mounted police units in several other Chinese cities disbanded due to the illness and death of their horses, Dalian’s mounted police force continued to grow, now consisting of over 40 purebred Western thoroughbreds. The quality of the Dalian female mounted police has also steadily improved—most now hold bachelor's degrees, with some even possessing master's degrees, all skilled in combat techniques, making them both talented and beautiful. If one were to hold a beauty contest among Dalian’s green spaces, the crown would undoubtedly go to the tender lawns of People’s Square. The neat, vibrant green is beyond description—just as this unique shade of green cannot be replicated on a palette.
