Dalian University Museum

Dalian University Museum is situated on the northern foothills of Dahei Mountain in the campus of Dalian University at the southern tip of the Liaodong Peninsula. It is the first comprehensive museum invested in by a university in Northeast China. It has been recognized by the Liaoning Provincial Department of Education, the Provincial Education Commission, the Dalian Municipal Science and Technology Bureau, the Propaganda Department, and other departments as the “Liaoning Provincial Science and Technology Popularization Base,” the “Liaoning Provincial College Student Social Practice Base,” the “Dalian Municipal Science Popularization Education Base,” and the “Dalian Municipal Outstanding Science Popularization Education Base.” The museum was completed in September 2002 and began trial exhibitions. It officially opened in September 2004. In October 2006, it was rated as a National AAA-level Tourist Attraction. In 2011, the Dalian Jinzhou New Area Management Committee awarded Dalian University Museum the honorable title of “Advanced Tourist Attraction.”

The museum covers a construction area of 6,500 square meters, with an exhibition area of nearly 3,760 square meters. Divided according to the university’s disciplines and majors, it consists of five sections: the Humanities and Social Sciences Exhibition Hall, the Natural Sciences Exhibition Hall, the Life Sciences Exhibition Hall, the Art Exhibition Hall, and the Northeast Historical Relics Exhibition Hall. It houses nearly 10,000 images and physical exhibits, covering knowledge content related to 41 majors across the university’s ten major academic disciplines. The museum also features teaching facilities such as multimedia projectors, touch screens, and computers. The exhibits include both historical and modern items; some are imported, while others are the results of research and innovation by the university’s faculty and students. Among them, more than 8,500 physical exhibits were made or collected by teachers and students themselves, covering instruments, parts, devices, specimens, models, musical instruments, famous painting replicas, and historical relics from the Northeast from most of the university’s majors. These include bomb disposal robots, small chemical devices capable of actual petroleum refining, sewage treatment system devices, multimedia controllable brain model demonstration devices, infrared principle displays, solar energy principle displays, human plastinated specimens, and Chinese herbal medicine specimens. They provide teaching venues for multiple majors such as medicine, chemistry, mechanical design and manufacturing and automation, Chinese language and literature, history, music, and fine arts.

As a base for comprehensive quality education, Dalian University Museum has fully leveraged its functions in showcasing disciplines and majors, science popularization, teaching, displaying achievements in scientific and technological activities, museum collections, spiritual enlightenment, and exchange. Visitors strolling through can gain a deeper understanding of society, learn about Chinese and foreign cultures and humanities, ask questions, think critically, actively seek answers, comprehend the true meaning of life, and reflect on the relationship between humans, society, and nature. They can deeply appreciate the intrinsic connections between art and life, art and nature, and art and science; understand history and rediscover the carriers of Chinese civilization, guiding them to think and observe society from a cultural perspective. Dalian University Museum has not only become a spiritual sanctuary for the university to cultivate students’ scientific spirit, noble character, aesthetic views, hands-on abilities, and innovative thinking as part of their overall quality, but it also provides space and a platform for public science education, playing a positive role in promotion. It creates a cultural atmosphere that cultivates virtue and refines character, generating a cultural “pickling effect” that shapes people.
