Tian Nu Mountain Natural Scenic Area is located in Maquanzi Township, Fushun County, Liaoning Province, covering an area of 8,600 acres. It is part of the Changbai Mountain range, with its main peak standing at an elevation of 780 meters. The area is renowned for its abundant production of Tian Nu magnolia.

Within Tian Nu Mountain Scenic Area, the mountains are high and the forests dense, offering fresh air. Surrounded by cliffs on all sides and dotted with ancient caves and wonders, the area boasts 28 major attractions including Tongtian Road, Tongtian Cave, Kaishan Rock Crevice, and Phoenix Terrace. The scenic zone features a rare expanse of 280 hectares of virgin forest, where ancient trees reach skyward, their thick trunks and sprawling branches creating a dim, moist, and mysterious atmosphere. The rich biodiversity and pristine ecological environment contribute to its unique tourism appeal. Notably, the Tian Nu magnolia, valued both for its ornamental beauty and medicinal properties, has formed a natural conservation and propagation zone within the park. This provides an ideal foundation for green tourism experiences centered around enjoying nature, eco-friendly dining, and purchasing local green products.

Traveling in Tian Nu Mountain means returning to nature. Spring brings wild vegetable picking and azalea viewing; summer offers divine tea tasting and magnolia appreciation; autumn is for harvesting wild fruits and admiring red maples; winter is a time for feasting and celebrating harvest, together forming Tian Nu Mountain’s distinctive four-season tourism charm. In spring, the area is covered with tender grass and blooming mountain flowers, making it perfect for outings and foraging. Strolling through the province’s largest natural wild vegetable picking area (over 20,000 mu), visitors can enjoy the vitality of youth while experiencing the joy of harvesting. In summer, it serves as an excellent destination for summer retreats, health tours, and herbal plant exploration. Tian Nu Mountain is abundant in legendary divine tea, san cha jiu ye cao (a rare herb), as well as precious medicinal herbs like ginseng and eleutherococcus, along with nationally protected tree species such as Tian Nu magnolia—historically a magnet for herbalists. Autumn is ideal for hiking and fitness activities. The main peak of Tian Nu Mountain—Magnolia Peak—stands at 780 meters above sea level. In crisp, clear autumn weather, visitors can climb Magnolia Peak to admire the colorful forests, breathe in the forest’s oxygen-rich air, and relax both body and mind. In winter, it becomes a one-of-a-kind destination for snowfield nourishment tours. Known as Liaoning’s snowy plateau, the area features high mountains, dense forests, and abundant resources, with the local forest frogs and river fish being especially prized. Winter visitors to Tian Nu Mountain can enjoy snowscape views while savoring unique mountain delicacies such as forest frogs and river fish.

【Scenic Walks】

Stone Gate Waterfall

Approximately 300 meters from the mountain gate lies a stone gate and a natural small pool. The gorge entrance is less than 5 meters wide, with a significant drop that forms a waterfall and the sound of babbling water.

Treasure Gate (Kaishan Rock Crevice)

Also called “One-Line Sky,” “Squeezing Stone,” or Kaishan Rock Crevice, the Treasure Gate is 33 meters long, 13 meters high, and less than 1 meter wide. The cliff walls are smooth and sloped at about 30 degrees. An ancient vine hangs down from above, allowing for rock climbing. The Treasure Gate is even more precipitous than the One-Line Skies found in Qianshan, Fenghuangshan, and Houshi Forest Park, earning the title of Liaoning’s most spectacular “One-Line Sky.” Fushun TV’s program “Leisure Time” featured it in a special report in August 2002.

Tongtian Cave

Located beneath the main peak of Tian Nu Mountain, in the northern side of Heixiazigou within a stone forest, Tongtian Cave can be entered through an opening at the base of the stone formation. The cave is about 1 meter in diameter and 10 meters high, with bizarre rock formations lining its walls. Visitors can climb to the cave’s ceiling exit. A strong gust of wind blows out from the cave entrance, capable of fluttering pant legs and sending chills. The cave is also home to an extremely rare species of white bat. It is said to be the dwelling place of the legendary White Bat (or Hundred Blessings) Immortal. Tongtian Cave serves as an excellent viewing platform, offering a panoramic view of Tian Nu Mountain’s main peak.

【Legends of the Scenic Spots】

The Legend of Tian Nu Mountain

Among the countless peaks in Maquanzi Township, situated in the mountainous region of eastern Liaoning, there stands a solitary, strikingly prominent immortal mountain known as Tian Nu Mountain, commonly called “Crooked Cliff.” Stretching from east to west, its southern end is known as Little Crooked Cliff, the northern end as Big Crooked Cliff, and the central peak as Tian Nu Peak. The peak derives its name from the abundance of Tian Nu magnolia growing in the vicinity. From a distance, the two cliffs resemble two giant eagles perched atop the mountain range, overlooking the rivers and mountains of Maquanzi and witnessing the passage of time in the nearby villages.

Though not particularly high—the main peak of Crooked Cliff rises only about 700 meters above sea level—the mountain is home to a series of legendary sites shaped as if by heavenly craftsmanship: the Chaoyang Cave where the nine fairies were said to reside, the Beiying Cave of the fox spirit Hu Sigezi, the Kaishan Rock Crevice, the South Heaven Gate, the Divine Eagle Cliff, the Steamed Bun Cliff, and the Revolving Heart Lake. As the saying goes, “A mountain needs no great height to be sacred when immortals dwell within.” It is these beautiful legends passed down through generations by the people living at the mountain’s base that have imbued this peak with spiritual essence and a touch of magic. A poem reads:

The divine eagle guards the South Heaven Gate;

Immortals gather atop Tian Nu Peak.

A massive lock hangs by the cave’s gate,

Towering trees entwined with ancient vines.

Rare flowers and plants fill the valley;

Ancient tales linger, captivating all who listen.

Early May to early October is ideal for sightseeing, hiking, and picking various wild vegetables; mid-May to early September is best for summer retreats; mid-September to mid-October is perfect for viewing the colorful forests; early December to early February of the following year is ideal for snow adventures, winter tonics, and exploring folk culture.
