Former Site of the Niuzhuang Club

The former site of the Niuzhuang Club is a cultural relic protection unit of Liaoning Province.

The former site of the Niuzhuang Club is located in Sanlou Community, Batandi Subdistrict Office, Zhanqian District. It was originally a foreign social club established in China, initially developed from the British Chamber of Commerce founded in 1904.

The former site of the Niuzhuang Club was built in 1915, with the number “1915” originally displayed on its rooftop. It served as the location of a foreign social club established by foreigners after the modern port of Yingkou was opened. The building has two floors, with the first floor being semi-underground and featuring a flat top. The entire structure is built with red bricks and a wooden frame, topped with an iron roof in a herringbone pattern. The interior includes a library, large guest rooms, a billiard table area, offices, a simple kitchen, a bathhouse, and a barbershop. The building covers a construction area of 1,994 square meters and reaches a height of 12 meters. During the Japanese occupation of Yingkou, the site was repurposed as a military police station, complete with interrogation and water prison rooms, where Chinese people were detained, leaving behind a history tainted with bloodshed.

In 2005, the Liaoning Branch of the Agricultural Bank of China transferred the ownership of the former site of the Niuzhuang Club to the Yingkou Municipal Bureau of Culture. In 2007, Liaoning Hanhong Real Estate Co., Ltd. took over the site and invested in its comprehensive restoration, which was completed in 2009.

In 1990, the Yingkou Municipal People’s Government designated the former site of the Niuzhuang Club as a municipal-level cultural relic protection unit. In 2007, the People’s Government of Liaoning Province (Liaozhengfa [2007] No. 22) listed it as a provincial-level cultural relic protection unit. The scope of cultural relic protection and the construction control zone designated by the People’s Government of Liaoning Province (Liaozhengfa [2008] No. 48) are as follows: within 5 meters outside the outer wall base of the former site is the protected area; within 20 meters outside the protected area is the Class III construction control zone.
