Former Site of the Yokohama Specie Bank Dormitory

The former site of the Yokohama Specie Bank dormitory is a cultural relic protection unit of Yingkou City.

The former site of the Yokohama Specie Bank dormitory is located in the Sanlou Community of Batiandi Subdistrict Office, Zhanqian District. It is a building constructed by the Japanese during Yingkou’s modern period.

The building is 28.6 meters long from north to south, 26 meters wide from east to west, with a total floor area of 744 square meters. Its slightly concave layout covers an area of approximately 519 square meters. According to historical records, after the Japanese second occupation of Yingkou, a new building was constructed to serve as the Military Government Office. After the office was abolished, it was used by the Residual Affairs Committee of the Military Government, and later became the Yokohama Specie Bank. That building was a Russian classical-style structure built with blue bricks and finished with plaster. This particular building served as the bank’s office. Ogawa Yoshikazu’s *Yingkou Chronological Record* states that the new Yokohama Specie Bank building opened on October 2, 1909. This new bank building (now the office building of the Literary Federation) is located to the west of the old Yokohama Specie Bank building. It was designed by Japanese architect Tsumaki Yorinaka, constructed with red bricks, and features a clean and simple façade without excessive ornamentation, giving it a somewhat American modern architectural feel.

In 2012, the Yingkou Municipal People’s Government (Ying Zheng [2012] No. 173) designated the former site of the Yokohama Specie Bank dormitory as a municipal-level cultural relic protection unit. The cultural relic protection scope and construction control zone announced by the Yingkou Municipal People’s Government (Ying Zheng [2013] No. 185) are as follows: the protection area includes the land within 5 meters east, 5 meters west, 5 meters south, and 4 meters north of the outer wall base of the former site of the Yokohama Specie Bank dormitory; the construction control zone of Class II includes the land within 20 meters south, 20 meters north, 20 meters east, and 20 meters west of the protection area.
