Yangwatang Scenic Area
Black Reservoir and White Reservoir Black Reservoir, also known as Black Lake, gets its name from the greenish hue of its water. It is a pooled lake composed of seven interconnected lakes, stretching in a strip about a hundred meters long. The Black Lake is divided into two sections—commonly referred to as the Large Reservoir and the Small Reservoir—which are both located at the foot of Ma’an Mountain. The Small Reservoir covers an area of about 100 square meters, while the Large Reservoir is around 300 square meters, both roughly oval in shape. The Small Reservoir flows year-round without ever drying up; the Large Reservoir has five springs that continuously bubble up, keeping the water abundant yet never overflowing. A local folk rhyme says: “Sister Springs, Sister Springs, they look black but scoop out white, never full when large, never dry when small, inexhaustible to drink, never run out in drought years,” describing the magical scenery of the Large and Small Reservoirs. In years with heavy rainfall, the water becomes so deep that the bottom is not visible, earning praise for its beauty: “No pine shadows float on the green algae at the shore, lotuses drift in from all directions when the wind rises.”
