The Zengcheng Underground Transportation Liaison Headquarters was located in Xiaojing Village. Established in the 1940s, there were two liaison stations about 200 meters apart, both typical examples of Hakka walled houses. At their entrances still hang commemorative plaques awarded after the liberation to Song Gang and Song Bo, inscribed with “Glory to Military Families” and “Glory to Workers’ Families.” Song Gang’s former residence is still inhabited, while Song Bo’s has been renovated and is now well preserved, becoming one of Guangdong’s red tourism sites. The names of Song Gang, Song Bo, Song Yue, Chen Lizhong, Qiu Songxue, Li Yiming, Zhong Yumin, Zhong Daming, Xu Wen, Zhu Yi, Luo Sheng, and countless other heroes who followed in their footsteps are stones forged in blood and fire—stones that shine like bright rubies nestled in the embrace of the Paitan land.
The former site of the Zengcheng County Committee is an ordinary local building with walls made of blue bricks, a wooden roof structure, and black swallow-tile roofing. Although it is surrounded by crumbling walls, broken beams, and overgrown weeds, one can almost hear the voices of the past. At the center of the lintel above the entrance are three bold characters: Shan Hai Zhen (Mountain-Sea Town), flanked by carvings of the names of heroes such as Song Gang, Song Yue, and Song Bo, who once led troops stationed here and fought bravely, making indelible contributions to the Liberation War. Walking straight through the main gate, you’ll find a small courtyard typical of traditional Hakka architecture in southern China during the Qing Dynasty—featuring stone steps, pillars, a central courtyard, multiple gates, a study, a main hall, all exuding simplicity and elegance. On either side of the main hall and at the back are rows of interconnected rooms, totaling about ten, each not very large in size.

Site of the First Battle Against Japanese Aggression in South China — According to research, the first battle against Japanese aggression in South China took place in Baimianshi Village, Zhengguo. On October 12, 1938, after landing in Daya Bay, the Japanese army launched attacks on Zengcheng along three routes. On the 19th, Chinese defending forces set up defenses and held their ground in Baimianshi Village at the border of Zengcheng and Boluo. The next day, they fought fiercely against the Japanese army atop Tiger Stone (a mountain name) in the village. Over 130 soldiers from the Nationalist Army were killed in the battle. Currently, on the former site of this first battle, the local government has erected a grand monument to the martyrs of the Anti-Japanese War. The surrounding area features relief sculptures, illustrations, and explanatory texts that recreate the historical events of the war. A small plaza has been built around the monument, enclosed by kapok trees, with a plaque commemorating the heroic deeds. The Hundred Martyrs’ Tomb has also been renovated, landscaped, and adorned with azaleas and phoenix trees, creating a predominantly red-hued memorial landscape symbolizing the blood shed by the martyrs.

Niu Güzhang is located at the border between Paitan Town in the northern part of Zengcheng and Longmen County. The best observation point requires walking around to the other side of the peak that resembles the eyed ox head, then slightly looking down to see it clearly). The slopes are steep, the valleys are deeply cut, and there are numerous waterfalls and gorges. Between the mountains are basins and valley terraces of various sizes. The entire mountain range stretches for dozens of miles, with few nearby villages, sparse population, dense and pristine vegetation, making it a great spot for adventure and exploration.
