Niu Güzhang

Niu Güzhang is situated at the junction of Paitan Town in the northern part of Zengcheng and Longmen County, overlooking Nankun Mountain to the north. It comprises four peaks exceeding 1,000 meters in height (one peak features two crouching baby mice on its summit, one resembles an upright, eyed ox head, one looks like a straw hat, and one appears as a water buffalo lying down — hence the name Niu Güzhang. The best vantage point is on the opposite side of the peak resembling the eyed ox head; by looking slightly downward from beside the “eye,” the formation becomes clear). The mountain slopes are steep, and the river valleys are deeply incised, featuring many cascading waterfalls and canyons. Between the peaks lie basins and valley terraces of varying sizes. The mountain range spans tens of miles, with few villages nearby, a sparse population, lush and untouched vegetation, making it an ideal destination for exploration and adventure.

To the south is the Lingshan Cave, a small basin where an ancient temple was built to worship the mythological “Headless Buddha.” It was later converted to enshrine the three loyal Southern Song Dynasty heroes who resisted the Yuan Dynasty — Wen Tianxiang, Chen Xiushi, and Zhang Shijie — and renamed the “Three Loyal Princes Temple.” (This section is not verified)

Niu Güzhang has narrow mountain ridges and steep slopes. The area features several scenic spots centered around waterfalls, peculiar rocks, and caves. Notable ones include “Seven Fairies,” “Star Crag,” and “Stone Chamber.” The largest cave is known as “Stone Cave Heaven,” which can accommodate hundreds of people. Niu Güzhang boasts not only magnificent and diverse scenery but also rich flora and fauna resources. Wildlife includes mountain cattle, wild boars, goats, deer, yellow whales, pangolins, turtles, snakes, swiftlets, thrushes, partridges, larks, and eagles. The forest mainly consists of ancient pines, fir trees, red tung trees, erythrophleum trees, and sandalwood trees. There is also a wealth of medicinal herbs such as adenophora, morinda root, achyranthes, crane’s bill herb, and Paris polyphylla.

The area from Niu Güzhang to Gaotan and Dafengmen produces “Cenxi Red” stone, a fine-grained granite from the fourth phase of the Yanshanian period, which turns red due to surface alteration and albitization.

Paitan Town: Overview: Paitan Town is located at the northern edge of the Pearl River Delta region and is the largest mountainous town in the northern part of Zengcheng.
