Trans-Cool Tokyo—Japanese MOT Contemporary Selection is co-organized by the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo (abbreviated as MOT), and the Tokyo Cultural Creation Project to present the image of “art and culture creating cities.” This internationally curated thematic exhibition has previously been held in Bangkok and Singapore, and this year moves to the Taipei Fine Arts Museum. The term “Trans-Cool Tokyo” originates from “Cool Japan”—a concept used to promote Japan’s cultural soft power. In order to assert their uniqueness within global pop culture, the artists employ various mediums to depict distinctive cultural phenomena and products of today’s society, thereby expressing themselves while responding to the current social context. By transcending the often superficial “cool” culture of the times, the exhibition allows Taiwanese audiences to appreciate the multi-layered allure of contemporary Japanese art.
