Ancient Street of the Frontier

Tucked away in the bustling city, Hohhot’s Ancient Street of the Frontier was first built during the Wanli era of the Ming Dynasty and has a history of over 400 years. Located near Da Zhao Temple on Da Nan Street in Hohhot, it is an ancient street featuring Ming and Qing architectural styles. To the west of the street entrance lies a cross street with an archway named Ancient Street of the Frontier. Stretching 380 meters in length, all the buildings fully reflect the characteristics of the Ming and Qing periods and are hailed as a concentrated reflection of old Hohhot’s historical legacy. The street is lined on both sides with grey-brick, grey-tile buildings with upturned eaves and ridged roofs, exuding a distinct old-world charm. Relief carvings, murals, yurt-style roofs, and the wheels of traditional Mongolian carts offer a glimpse into unique Mongolian culture. Strolling along the street, you’ll find antiques and curios, old-fashioned barbershops, and time-honored restaurants that recreate the commercial prosperity of the Ming and Qing eras. In August 2013, Hohhot began protective environmental improvements and renovations on the Ancient Street of the Frontier to better preserve its rich cultural heritage.
