Global hotel booking expert Hotels.com has recently released the latest edition of the Club Sandwich Index (CSI), revealing the dining prices at hotels across various global destinations in 2015. This index has been recognized by both industry insiders and travelers as an indicator of local spending. This year, the CSI Club Sandwich Index has been upgraded to Version 2.0, adding three more commonly found food and beverage items in hotel dining to provide consumers with a more comprehensive understanding of hotel meal prices around the world.

Geneva has the most expensive hotel meals, Beijing is mid-to-upper tier, while Bogotá offers the best value for hotel dining

The upgraded CSI Club Sandwich Index 2.0 shows that Geneva not only has the highest-priced club sandwich but also leads all destinations with an average total daily hotel dining cost of 538 yuan. Meanwhile, the capital of Colombia, Bogotá, with an average total of 187 yuan, is the most value-for-money city for full-day hotel dining. In this survey, the Chinese capital Beijing has an average total of 368 yuan, placing it in the mid-range among all surveyed cities, ranking eleventh.

The upgraded CSI Club Sandwich Index 2.0 covers the prices of the following four types of food and beverages commonly chosen by hotel guests:

  1. Served for dinnerClub sandwich
  2. Served for lunch or dinnerBurger meal setWhich includes a burger, fries, and a soda
  3. Served during tea timeCoffee
  4. Served as an after-dinner drinkA glass of red wine

The average daily hotel dining price in the CSI Club Sandwich Index 2.0 is calculated based on the actual prices paid by travelers (including taxes and service charges) for the above four types of food and beverages at 30 hotels in the capital cities or major tourist cities of the surveyed countries, with a total of 840 hotels across 28 countries participating in the survey, including three- to five-star hotels.

When it comes to hotel dining, diners can get great value in Bogotá, where the average meal price is 187 yuan, while Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires in the southern hemisphere are also competitive, with averages of 212 yuan and 250 yuan respectively.

If consumers order a coffee in a hotel in South Korea, they may end up paying for the most expensive coffee, with Seoul topping the list at an average coffee price of 60 yuan. Interestingly, enjoying a glass of red wine in a five-star hotel in Paris could cost more than buying a club sandwich in the hotels of 19 other cities, including New York, Dublin, Sydney, and Berlin.

Ms. Peggy Chung, Greater China Marketing Director of Hotels.com, said: "To further enhance the user experience, this year we have upgraded the CSI Club Sandwich Index. Through comprehensive and in-depth price comparisons and analysis, we provide consumers with a more accurate cost overview for hotel dining. Based on the data results from the CSI Club Sandwich Index 2.0, along with the diverse hotel options available on our website, travelers can quickly and easily find hotels that fit their budget — for example, if you choose to go to Geneva, you might think about ordering a burger meal at a local hotel, but the same amount of money could buy you nearly six glasses of red wine in a hotel in Bogotá."
