Okinawa’s north, central, and southern regions each have their own unique charm. The southern part of Okinawa not only boasts the beautiful white sands of Shintoshin Beach, but you can also explore the Ryukyu history and culture at the Okinawa World Cultural Kingdom to enrich your knowledge. There's also Senagajima Island, known as the "Little Greece of Okinawa," where you can watch planes take off and land while enjoying great food and shopping — perfect for a one-day trip. Now, let KKday show you how to plan your southern Okinawa itinerary.

Okinawa has many small islands and scattered attractions. The editor recommends using the monorail in Naha city, but for other spots, self-driving or joining a one-day tour is more convenient and cost-effective — buses are a hassle, and taxis are expensive. Chinen Cape, Seifa Utaki, and the Okinawa World Cultural Kingdom are must-visit spots in southern Okinawa, along with the increasingly popular Senagajima Island in recent years. The editor suggests grouping them into a one-day tour for a smoother route.

If you can’t drive like the editor, joining a one-day tour to explore southern Okinawa is highly recommended. After experiencing it firsthand, the itinerary is well-paced, not rushed, allowing you to slowly enjoy many beautiful sceneries in Okinawa. Additionally, the bus seats are comfortable, and you can even bring large luggage on board — very thoughtful.

The boarding point is located in front of the Okinawa Prefectural Government Building in Naha, as shown in the picture below.

If you want to admire Okinawa’s most unique coastline, the editor’s personal favorite spot is Chinen Cape Park. With its blue sky, endless ocean, bright sunshine, gentle breeze, and a cup of tea — it could be considered the ultimate enjoyment in life.

At night, you can also come to Chinen Cape to stargaze. Without light pollution, the starry sky is a sight you’ll never forget.

Chinen Cape Park has been a hot topic on social media recently, featuring Okinawa’s most unique coastline. The gradient blue waters and the seamless sea-and-sky view make every photo look like it’s from a magazine. The park also features well-designed stair-step paths. From the top looking down, you can take in the lush green fields and the blue sky in one sweeping view.

The first time you see the word “Utaki,” you might be as puzzled as the editor. In fact, “Utaki” refers to sacred places where deities reside in Ryukyuan mythology — often forests, springs, or rivers — and in ancient times, men were prohibited from entering.

Seifa Utaki was the highest-ranking Utaki during the Ryukyu Kingdom era and is the most sacred prayer site. Though there aren’t any special displays inside, it’s definitely worth visiting to experience how the Ryukyu people worshipped nature.

Okinawa World Cultural Kingdom recreates the streetscapes of the Ryukyu Kingdom era. Visiting here feels like stepping back in time to the days of the Ryukyu Dynasty. The site also features a museum, hands-on activities, and performances that offer deeper insights into Okinawa’s history and culture.

The park also houses Japan’s second-longest publicly accessible limestone cave, Gyokusendo Cave, a natural wonder showcasing the power of nature. Though only 800 meters of the total 5-kilometer cave are open to visitors, this short stretch is awe-inspiring enough to be celebrated as one of Okinawa’s most remarkable underground natural attractions.

The Ryukyu Traditional Houses Village resembles a castle town of Shuri, with rows of charming red-tiled traditional houses. Aside from admiring the classic architecture, you can also try hands-on experiences such as indigo dyeing, papermaking, and glassblowing—offering an authentic taste of Ryukyu life.

For example, you can try playing the shamisen, a traditional Japanese string instrument. Unlike wearing a kimono, which is widely available across many areas, playing the shamisen in a historic Ryukyu-style house here gives you a uniquely memorable experience.

Since you’re in Okinawa, take the opportunity to learn more about the Ryukyu Kingdom and enrich your knowledge of its history. The Kingdom History Museum not only displays various Shisa statues (Okinawan lion-dogs) but also features an Asian lion believed to be the prototype of the Shisa. Additionally, the museum frequently hosts special exhibitions themed around Okinawan history, culture, and daily life.

Senagajima Island is just a 30-minute drive from Naha Airport. Aside from enjoying water activities, you can also watch planes take off and land. In 2015, the multi-purpose shopping complex “Umikaji Terrace” opened on the island, featuring white buildings reminiscent of Greece—perfect for Instagram-worthy photos. It has become a popular attraction in Okinawa in recent years.

When you come to Senaga Island, this Happiness Pancake Shop is an absolute must-visit spot. As it’s a highly popular queue-worthy eatery, it’s recommended to make a reservation online in advance. Although the menu offers a variety of pancake flavors, my personal favorite is the classic “Happiness Pancake,” which comes with a generous serving of whipped cream and fresh strawberries, all topped on a fluffy pancake that’s crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. After just one bite, you’ll be filled with happiness.

The name of the overflowing burger joint Chimufugasu comes from an Okinawan dialect word meaning “to surprise.” True to its name, not only is the taste amazing, but the portion size is astonishingly large — a whopping 500 grams per burger. For those who want to have a hearty and satisfying meal, Chimufugasu is definitely your most worthwhile choice.
