The Baotou Ajila Locomotive Depot, built in 1924 and located 25 kilometers west of Baotou, is one of the larger steam locomotive depots in North and Northwest China. It currently has over 120 locomotives and more than ten types of old locomotives, including (FD) brand locomotives that survived the flames of World War II, Showa 10th year Japanese-produced locomotives, small Polish-made locomotives (QJ, SJ, JF, JS), and others. Visitors can tour the locomotive dispatching office, the locomotive repair and maintenance workshops, the garages for foreign old locomotives and Chinese vintage locomotives, as well as take a ride around the depot on a locomotive. The site also hosts professional seminars and technical exchanges.

In Europe and America, steam locomotives have been replaced by diesel and electric locomotives. As a result, an increasing number of tourists from these regions have developed a strong interest in steam locomotives, leading to a continuous stream of visitors coming to see them.
