The Miaoli Family Service Center will award college scholarships to help 180 university students ease their tuition and miscellaneous fees burden. Seven female university students under the center’s support participated in the “University Students I Can” program. Last year, they taught academic subjects and organized recreational group activities using self-made teaching materials at Donghe Elementary School in Nanzhuang Township. Although they were still students, they actively used their knowledge to give back to society.
Take from society, give back to society. The seven female university students from the Miaoli Family Service Center felt grateful for the scholarships funded by kind-hearted members of the public, which allowed them to study with peace of mind. Starting last October, they went to Donghe Elementary School in Nanzhuang Township twice a month to care for seven children, providing free tutoring, preparing lessons themselves, creating teaching materials, and engaging the children from remote areas in various team activities.
A social worker said that the university students took time off from school on weekends to serve in the mountains. While leading the activities, they observed the children’s teamwork interactions, taught them hygiene habits, and hoped the university students would boost their own confidence through the process.
The Family Service Center will distribute 3.3 million New Taiwan Dollars in college scholarships on March 8 to help 180 university students reduce the burden of tuition and book fees. Chen Ying-jung, a university student who participated in the program, said that previously she served children supported by the Family Service Center, but this time she went up to the mountains to serve children not under the center’s support, which was quite challenging. She also hopes more members of the public will support the fundraising for university scholarships so that students supported by the Family Service Center can grow even stronger.
