New “Water Flows Uphill”! Taitung’s Luye Unveils Its “Two-Tier Terrace Arched Water Bridge”

The well-known “Water Flows Uphill Recreational Area” in Donghe, Taitung, used to attract many tourists with its peculiar scene of water seemingly flowing against gravity. Now,Taitung has a new “water flows uphill” attraction — located at the red-and-white Two-Tier Terrace Water Bridge in Ruilong Village, Luye Township. It is the only scenic arched water bridge in the country. Thanks to its unique design and the visual illusion of water flowing upstream at the end of the channel, it has quickly become a new local attraction.

Ruilong Village in Luye Township originally had an irrigation channel leading up to the Two-Tier Terrace highland, built manually by early settlers. After years of use, it had deteriorated significantly, unable to transport water efficiently or meet the irrigation needs of downstream agriculture. Luo Yingjian, president of the Taitung Irrigation Association, said that local residents actively sought government funding through the Rural Regeneration Program to renovate the old structure and create a new rural landscape. The Two-Tier Terrace Water Bridge not only ensures smooth water delivery but also incorporates ecological protection and unique scenic value.

In collaboration with public agencies such as the Taitung County Government, the Taitung Soil and Water Conservation Bureau, the Taitung Irrigation Association, and the Luye District Farmers’ Association, along with support from local community manpower, the Two-Tier Terrace Water Bridge was successfully completed. To celebrate its completion, an event titled “Golden Rice Waves and Fragrant Aroma: Join Hands (Thousand Hands) to Protect the Water Bridge” was held at 3 PM on Saturday, June 4, at the Two-Tier Terrace Water Bridge. The township office stated that in the future, it will integrate attractions such as the Waterwheel Rice Mill, the Floral Cloth Lantern Museum, and the Xinliang Wetland to develop a cycling trail, offering visitors a comprehensive travel experience.
