The Nanhai Wetland Scenic Area in Baotou is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction and a national water conservancy scenic area.

Nanhai, situated to the south of Donghe District in Baotou, spans a total area of 2,000 hectares, including 480 hectares of water surface. With its vast waters and beautiful scenery, it is backed by green mountains to the north and faces the Yellow River to the south. The expansive, misty blue waters host gatherings of gulls, while elegant boats drift by and fishermen’s songs ring out. It has long been hailed as the “West Lake beyond the Great Wall.” In 2008, it was rated as a national 4A-level tourist scenic area. In the same year, it was approved by the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region as a provincial-level Yellow River wetland nature reserve, becoming one of the uniquely charming tourist attractions in the Grassland Steel City.

Nanhai Park is located to the south of Donghe District in Baotou. In the past, this area was part of a former meandering course of the Yellow River. After the river changed its course and moved southward, it formed the current water surface and beach grasslands. The development zone covers a total area of 2,000 hectares, including 480 hectares of water surface, and is divided into a water activity area and a lakeside sightseeing area. To the north of Nanhai lie hazy green mountains, while to the south it is embraced by the jade-like ribbon of the Yellow River. The lake boasts shimmering blue waters, the lakeshore is rich with lush water plants, and gulls soar through the sky, creating uniquely beautiful scenery. In 1985, this area was developed as a tourism zone. After years of careful planning and development, it has gradually taken shape. The development zone seamlessly integrates the area’s natural beauty with man-made elements, giving it the rugged, bold character of the northern frontier as well as the delicate charm of the water towns in the south. It enjoys the reputation of being the “West Lake beyond the Great Wall” and has become one of the uniquely distinctive tourist scenic areas in the Grassland Steel City. Visitors here can not only go boating on the water, fishing in the lake, exploring the reed marshes, and resting in the gardens, but also enjoy the pleasant scenery of Nanhai.

Nanhai in Baotou is one of the larger inland lake scenic areas in China. Adjacent to the Yellow River, it covers an area of 1,585 hectares, including 333 hectares of water surface and 15,000 mu of wetland grassland. Over 200 species of wildlife and plants thrive here.

Nanhai in Baotou has long been known as a “water and land hub.” The water hub refers to the Nanhaizi Dock, which was a shipping and trade port along the banks of the Yellow River during the Kangxi era and has a history of more than 330 years. In the 30th year of the Daoguang reign (1850), the Yellow River changed its course, and the former river port town of Tuoketuo to the south was submerged by floodwaters. Since then, the Nanhaizi Ferry has become a key water transport hub and distribution center for hides and furs in the middle and upper reaches of the Yellow River. The economic status of old Baotou in the northwest region underwent significant changes, and the resulting economic prosperity made the Nanhaizi Ferry famous throughout the land. The vast waters have witnessed the once-booming “forest of boats and rafts” at the Nanhaizi Ferry, as well as its decline when the waters receded.

The predecessor of Nanhai Park in Baotou was the Baotou Fish Seed Station, which has a long history of fishery production. The fish species include traditional varieties such as wild Yellow River carp, flower carp, silver carp, crucian carp, and grass carp, as well as precious aquatic products such as Chinese mitten crabs, Yellow River catfish, blunt snout bream (also known as Wuchang fish), and Palaemon modestus. The abundant aquatic products attract visitors who come to enjoy the “all-fish feast” of Nanhai, as well as fishing enthusiasts.
