Dongguan Lianhu Park

The people of Qiaotou in Dongguan have a deep love for lotus flowers. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, Qiaotou already had thousands of acres of lotus ponds, especially the 100-plus-hectare Lianhu (Lotus) Lake that showcases the scenery described in the poem “Boundless green lotus leaves extend to the sky; the sunlit lotus blossoms glow with unique red.” Every summer, fragrant lotus blooms fill the air at Lianhu Lake, accompanied by laughter and songs, as visitors flock here to boat and admire the flowers.

Lianhu Lake is located in the center of Qiaotou Town and is a famous tourist area in Dongguan, as well as one of the best lotus-viewing spots in Guangdong Province. Originally named Liantang Lake, it is a natural lake and one of the five major lakes in the Qiaotou area (Dong Taihu, Lianhu, Mianqian Hu, Xinhu, and Langxia Hu). Lianhu Park includes the Songshan area and the Lianhu scenic area. Construction began in March 2000 and was completed on December 31 of the same year. The park is named after Lianhu Lake, which has a shoreline of about 2.5 kilometers and covers an area of 300 mu (approximately 20 hectares), with various colors of lotus flowers planted throughout. The annual Lotus Festival is held here.

The Qiaotou Town government places great importance on the construction and renovation of the Lianhu scenic area. In 2000, it invested heavily to build Lianhu Park and invited Guan Shanyue to inscribe the park’s name. Provincial calligraphers and painters contributed works to the art corridor, creating a delightful blend of famous artworks and picturesque landscapes. The Lianhu scenic area spans over 500,000 square meters and consists of 300 acres of Lianhu Lake, a classical gate tower, Songshan Sightseeing Tower, Lotus Viewing Pavilion, fitness garden, food street, cultural square, Lover’s Path, and lake tour route. The surrounding area also features supporting facilities such as a sports center, hotel services, and upscale residential communities, forming a city highlight where modern architecture complements natural scenery with a distinctive European flair. In 2006, Qiaotou Town invested 10 million yuan to carry out the first phase of renovation for the Lianhu scenic area, constructing a lotus viewing corridor, a close-to-lotus leisure area, and observation pavilions, further enhancing the cultural richness and visual appeal of the site.

In 2004 and 2005, the China Flower Association Lotus Branch, Dongguan Municipal Bureau of Culture, Dongguan Municipal Bureau of Tourism, and the People's Government of Qiaotou Town, Dongguan jointly hosted the first and second Dongguan Qiaotou Lotus Art Festivals at the Lianhu scenic area. The events included the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Lotus Exhibition, Lianhu Art Lantern Show, “Lianhu Beauty” Photography Competition, “Splendid Lotus Culture” Photo Exhibition, ethnic and folk song and dance evenings, “Blessings for Qiaotou” Cultural Performance, famous artists’ calligraphy and painting exhibition, investment project signing ceremony, and the grand closing gala “Love Fills Lianhu.” Over the two festivals, more than 500,000 visitors from the Pearl River Delta region and Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan were attracted.
