Dongguan Magnolia Grand Theatre is situated on the western axis of the central square in the city center, bordering Hongfu Road to the north and facing the Municipal Administrative Service Center, Convention Hall, and Exhibition Hall across the road. To the east, it adjoins a vast landscape square and echoes the Library, while to the south, it connects via an artificial music lake to the Youth Activity Center and Science & Technology Museum. Through careful planning and strict control, the relatively centralized arrangement of administrative and cultural public buildings on the central square of the administrative center has become a beautiful highlight in the development of the new district. The main structure of the Magnolia Grand Theatre resembles the fluttering skirt of a flamenco dancer spinning on the square of Dongguan’s administrative center, weaving a fragrant melody like that of a magnolia flower, perfectly blending with the vibrant spirit of Dongguan. Its unique and innovative design blends seamlessly with the surrounding environment, playing a significant role in enhancing the city’s cultural taste and promoting the realization of Dongguan’s goal to become a cultural hub.

It was designed under the overall plan proposed by world-renowned theater architect Carlos Ott from Canada, with Tongji University Architectural Design & Research Institute serving as the general design contractor. Dongguan Magnolia Grand Theatre has a total investment of 618 million yuan, covering an area of 36,010 square meters. It features a 1,600-seat main theater and a 400-seat multifunctional experimental theater. The main theater is equipped with a fully mechanized stage with smooth and rational technical design, makeup rooms for 250 performers simultaneously, an orchestra pit and rest area for 120 musicians for a full four-pipe-scale ensemble, as well as rehearsal halls for ballet, opera, and choir, premium VIP lounges, exhibition halls, Chinese and Western restaurants, a café, an art mall, and outdoor landscape leisure areas. Dongguan Magnolia Grand Theatre also includes an annex building furnished to the standard of a three-star hotel, capable of accommodating 200 performing arts staff and 170 theatre employees for accommodation and dining. With internationally first-class lighting systems, the stage lighting design and equipment performance of Dongguan Magnolia Grand Theatre reach advanced international and top domestic theater standards. The lighting system is divided into two parts: one for the main theater and one for the experimental theater. Both control systems and lighting fixtures are selected from internationally renowned brands. Both theaters are also equipped with subtitle display systems and projection equipment such as Belgium’s Barco.

Currently, the Magnolia Grand Theatre is largely completed—the architect has given it a beautiful body; however, to endow it with an equally beautiful soul, operational management is crucial. The vision is to establish the Magnolia Grand Theatre as a landmark of the cultural new city, a temple of high art, a cradle for civic education, a leader in the cultural industry, and a premier destination for social and tourism activities.
