Dongguan Dongyue Temple

Dongguan Dongyue Temple is a cultural relic protection unit of Dongguan City.

Dongyue Temple, also known as the Dongyue Pilgrimage Palace, is located at the southern foot of Xiangshan Mountain in Xiangshan Village. Its exact founding date is unknown. The temple faces south and covers an area of 1,000 square meters, enshrining the deities of the Dongyue Emperor pantheon. It was rebuilt in the fifth year of the Shaoshing era during the Southern Song Dynasty (1194), renovated and expanded in the fifteenth year of the Zhengde era of the Ming Dynasty (1520) by Liu Ju, and underwent several restorations during the Ming Dynasty, the Republican era, and 1993. The entire temple follows the contour of the mountain, ascending step by step from north to south, and consists of the front hall, the Ming Dynasty stone archway gate porch of Dongyue Temple, the incense pavilion, side halls, and the main hall, covering an area of about 1,000 square meters. The front hall features a flush gable roof with a post-and-lintel structure; the main hall has ruyi-style brackets.

The entire temple complex is divided into three parts: the central main courtyard and the east and west side courtyards. The front includes the main gate, incense pavilion, and main hall, flanked by symmetrical structures such as the Imperial Horse Pavilion, Tiger Hall, and auxiliary halls. With a total of 376 halls and rooms, it is the largest temple of the Orthodox Unity Sect of Taoism in North China. The entire temple complex is grand in scale and exquisitely built.

The main hall of Chashan Dongyue Temple enshrines the Dongyue Emperor, but the four guardian deities on either side are quite unique — all dressed in official robes, wearing armor or official hats. In 2008, a fire at the temple led to the destruction of the main hall. From surviving images of the four guardian deities, their attire appears more like Song Dynasty official dress, with all four statues holding ceremonial tablets, as if paying homage in a royal court.

The temple embodies the characteristics of Dongguan’s temples from the Ming and Qing Dynasties and holds certain historical, architectural, and folkloric research value. It was designated as a cultural relic protection unit of Dongguan City in 1989.

According to the Chashan Township Annals, during the reign of Emperor Wu of Liang (502–519), villagers built Yan Tower Temple, where monks planted tea along the mountainside, giving rise to the name “Chashan” (Tea Mountain). This dates back over 1,500 years. Since ancient times, Chashan has been home to many distinguished individuals… For more details about Chashan Town ++
