Dongguan University of Technology is the first regular undergraduate institution in Dongguan, Guangdong Province. It is jointly established by the provincial and municipal governments, with the city taking the lead. Nobel Laureate in Physics Dr. Yang Zhenning serves as the honorary president. The university is located in Dongguan, known as the starting point of modern Chinese history and a frontier of reform and opening-up. The city boasts strong economic strength and holds multiple titles, including "National Civilized City," "International Garden City," "China’s Most Economically Dynamic City," and "National Basketball City."

The university was planned in 1990, officially established in April 1992 with approval from the former State Education Commission, upgraded to a full-time regular undergraduate higher education institution in March 2002 with approval from the Ministry of Education, approved as a bachelor's degree-granting institution in May 2006, underwent the Ministry of Education’s undergraduate teaching assessment in May 2008 with good results, selected as one of the first universities under the Ministry of Education’s "Excellence in Engineering Education Program" in June 2010 along with Tsinghua University and 60 other institutions, approved as a proposed new master’s degree-granting unit by Guangdong Province in August 2010, recognized as a "Guangdong International Science and Technology Cooperation Base" in 2012, and designated as a key-supported high-level science and technology university in Guangdong in September 2015. Approved by the provincial civil affairs department, the university has established an Educational Development Foundation, raising over 240 million yuan for educational development and setting up scholarships such as the "Yang Zhenning Scholarship." The university currently has two campuses—Songshan Lake and Guancheng—covering a total area of 2,210 mu. The Songshan Lake Campus spans 1,870 mu and is located in the Songshan Lake National High-Tech Industrial Development Zone, where technology and natural landscapes coexist. It is a garden-style, modern campus with complete educational facilities, ample teaching and experimental equipment, and a well-developed public service system. The Guancheng Campus covers more than 340 mu, featuring convenient transportation, picturesque lakes and mountains, lush greenery, and a beautiful environment. The sports facilities at both campuses cover approximately 45,000 square meters and have been designated as a national track and field team training base. In 2006, the university successfully co-hosted the 7th Guangdong Provincial Games. The library has a total floor area of 45,020 square meters, houses a collection of 1.93 million books, and provides access to 39 databases and 1.7 million e-books among other digital resources. Both campuses feature a campus network with 10-gigabit backbone bandwidth and partial 1-gigabit bandwidth to desktops, and 38,000 information points have been established.
