Tomb of the Brave

The Tomb of the Brave is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

The Tomb of the Brave is located on the mountainside of Niuweiji Mountain (also known as Daren Mountain) in Zhikou Community, Humen Town, Dongguan City, Guangdong Province. It was built in the 11th year of the Guangxu reign during the Qing Dynasty (1885) as a collective burial site for Qing dynasty soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the Battle of Humen in the First Opium War. In 1974, the Tomb of the Brave was relocated to the mountainside of Niuweiji Mountain. Oriented from northeast to southwest, it measures 5.17 meters in width and 9.55 meters in depth, covering an area of approximately 50 square meters. A couplet is engraved on both sides of the tomb chamber: “The spirits rest in this auspicious land; the fine waters flow around the bright hall.” On February 26, 1841, British invaders launched a major attack on the Xiangdang Island Fort, which was the second line of defense at Humen. The defending soldiers fought back fiercely, and most of them died as martyrs. More than ten surviving warriors, though seriously wounded, chose death over surrender and heroically jumped into a well together, sacrificing their lives and demonstrating noble patriotism. After the battle, the soldiers and residents of Humen recovered the remains of the unnamed heroes from the well and buried them together with other fallen soldiers on the spot. In 1885, the people of Humen relocated the remains of these brave and loyal soldiers to the mountainside of Xiangdang Island to construct a tomb, inscribed as “Tomb of the Brave” (義勇之塚), oriented from northeast to southwest. The tombstone is 130 cm tall and 47 cm wide, made of granite, with the inscription on the upper part reading “Relocated and reburied in the Year of Yiyou, the 11th Year of Guangxu (1885), in the Flower Month.” The Tomb of the Brave serves as an important site for patriotic education and holds significant value for the study of the history of the Opium War and modern Chinese revolutionary history. It was designated as a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit in 1982.

It has a registered population of 3,000 and a migrant population of about 15,000. The community currently has 8 members on its “two committees” (including 7 Party committee members, 6 neighborhood committee members, with 5 holding dual positions). Among them, 3 have education levels of high school or below, and 5 have college or higher education.
