The former site of the Shajiao Fort Gateway is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

The former site of the Shajiao Fort Gateway is located within the Shajiao Fort in Shajiao Community, Humen Town, Dongguan City, Guangdong Province. It was constructed under the initiative of Zhang Zhidong, then Viceroy of Liangguang, as part of the preparations for coastal defenses in Guangdong. In the tenth year of the Guangxu reign during the Qing Dynasty (1884), the project was initiated under the supervision of Naval Commander Lou Yunting, with an inscription by Minister of War Peng Yulin. The gateway faces west and is 8.36 meters high, 7.75 meters wide, and 3.6 meters thick, featuring an arched roof and covering an area of approximately 1,130 square meters. The gateway includes a military reviewing platform at the top. On the front, the left side of the grey-plastered plaque reads, “The old Shajiao fort had long collapsed. In the winter of the Jiashen year, Minister of War Peng, under the direction of Viceroy Zhang of Guangdong, initiated the restoration of this strategic gateway. Lou Yunting, Commander of the Navy, supervised the project, which was completed and commemorated by inscribing this on stone.” The center reads “Shajiao,” and the right side reads, “Erected in the autumn month of the Yiyou year, Guangxu reign.” The gateway is flanked by rammed-earth walls, with the remaining sections stretching 63.9 meters in length, 3.7 meters in height, and 0.6 meters in thickness. The walls are densely pierced with gun ports. Behind the walls lies a spacious training ground, approximately 56.1 meters long and 17.1 meters wide. The former site of the Shajiao Fort Gateway serves as an important location for patriotic and national defense education, and holds significant value for the study of coastal defense facilities from the Ming and Qing dynasties. It was designated as a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit in 1982.
