The Jiebingyi Tomb

The Jiebingyi Tomb is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

The Jiebingyi Tomb is located at the foot of Baicao Mountain in Shajiao Community, Humen Town, Dongguan City, Guangdong Province. It was built in the 23rd year of the Daoguang reign during the Qing Dynasty (1843) as a collective burial site for 75 non-local Qing soldiers who sacrificed their lives in the Battle of Shajiao during the First Opium War; it was renovated twice, in 1964 and 1971. The tomb faces west and is constructed of lime-sand and granite. It measures 17.8 meters in length, 17.2 meters in width, and covers an area of approximately 306 square meters. The tomb mound has a semi-circular shape at the top, with a granite gravestone in the center engraved in clerical-style regular script with the four characters “節兵義墳” (“Tomb of Loyal Soldiers”). The upper inscription reads “Erected on a lucky day in June of the 23rd year of Daoguang,” and the lower one states “Collective Burial Site of 75 Loyal Soldiers.” The back and both sides of the tomb are surrounded by retaining walls. In front of the tomb mound is a square memorial hall, and further ahead are two steps protected by railings. The Jiebingyi Tomb serves as an important site for patriotic education and holds significant value for studying the history of the Opium War and modern Chinese revolutionary history. It was designated as a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit in 1982.
