East Garden Ancestral Hall

The East Garden Ancestral Hall is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

The East Garden Ancestral Hall is located in the center of Nanshe Village, Chashan Town, Dongguan City, Guangdong Province, to the left of the Yunye Ancestral Hall. It was built in the third year of the Xuantong reign of the Qing Dynasty (1911). Due to its small size, villagers chose a new site to rebuild it, and it was renovated in 1991. The hall faces southeast and is situated northwest, featuring a traditional enclosed courtyard layout with three bays, two courtyards, two corridors, and one skylight. The total width is 9.9 meters, the total depth is 16 meters, and the building covers an area of approximately 158 square meters. It has a brick, wood, and stone structure, with gray brick walls and red sandstone plinths. The roof is of the flush-gable type, with a mixed beam frame of raised beams and through-tenons, a gable-and-hip roof with a “人”-shaped fireproof wall, gray plastered decorative ridge tiles, clay tubular tiles, green glazed tile end caps, and scalloped water drip edges. The front gate features exquisitely carved wooden eave boards with the words “East Garden Ancestral Hall” written on red paper. The rear hall’s spirit altar originally enshrined the spirit tablet of East Garden Gong. East Garden Gong was the ninth-generation ancestor of the Xie clan in Nanshe, named Wen Zhuo, and the son of the eighth-generation ancestor Xie Hong (also known as Qiao Valley). It holds significant value for the study of ancestral hall architecture in the Lingnan region during the Qing Dynasty and the history of the Xie family. In 2006, it was designated as a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

Nanshe Village: Nanshe Village is located southeast of Chashan Town, about 18 kilometers from downtown Dongguan. It enjoys convenient transportation, covers an area of 4.13 square kilometers, governs seven villager groups, and has a registered population of 3,690 people, with approximately 10,000 non-local residents. In 2016, the village’s total operating income at both the village and group levels was 33.62 million yuan, with a net income of 18.08 million yuan, reflecting steady growth of the collective economy.
