Tomb of Chen Zhijing

The Tomb of Chen Zhijing is a cultural relic protection unit of Dongguan City.

The Tomb of Chen Zhijing is located on Xiaojie Mountain in Liangwu Village, Humen Town, Dongguan City. The tomb was built in the 36th year of the Jiajing reign during the Ming Dynasty (1557) and constructed with lime-sand rammed earth. It was renovated in the 16th year of the Daoguang reign (1836) during the Qing Dynasty and remains well-preserved.

Chen Zhijing was a native of Beizha Village in Humen. His grandson, Chen Yi (unknown–1592), brought sweet potatoes back from Annam (Vietnam) in the 10th year of the Wanli reign (1582). After successfully testing their cultivation, he purchased 30 acres of land to the right of his grandfather Chen Zhijing’s tomb for expanded planting. According to research by agricultural historians, this introduction predates by eight years the importation of sweet potatoes by Chen Zhenlong from Fuzhou’s Changle District in the 21st year of the Wanli reign (1593).

In 1989, the Dongguan Municipal People’s Government designated it as a cultural relic protection unit.
