The Tomb of the Luo Henxin Family

The Tomb of the Luo Henxin Family is a cultural tourism attraction.

The Tomb of the Luo Henxin Family is located in Huangcun, Dongguan. It was excavated in 1988. The site includes three tombs, arranged from south to north as follows: the joint burial tomb of Luo Henxin and his wife, the joint burial tomb of Luo Henxin’s grandparents, and the joint burial tomb of Luo Henxin’s parents. Stone sheep, stone horses, stone qilin, and stone-carved turtle pedestals with spirit way steles flank the tomb passages. The tombstone in front of the joint tomb of Luo Henxin and his wife is inscribed with “Tomb of Liu, the Lady bestowed the title of Shuren, and Luo, the Late Tongyidafu and Left Vice Censor-in-Chief, who retired and passed away in the third year of the TianShun era of the Great Ming,” and features two chambers—north and south. The chambers are built with stone slabs, containing wooden coffins, with lime sand filling the space between the coffins and the stone walls, topped with stone slabs. The southern chamber holds the remains of a female, while the northern chamber holds those of a male; human skeletal remains are still present. A stone epitaph is also placed on the ceiling of the northern chamber. Burial objects include pottery jars, blue-and-white porcelain jars, bowls, gold foil, copper coins, a bronze mirror inscribed with “Doing Good is the Greatest Joy,” a stone seal engraved with the seal script “Censor-in-Chief’s Seal” and “Top Imperial Scholar of the Yongle First Examination,” silver hairpins, earrings, and a piece of soot ink. The tomb of Luo Henxin’s parents bears a tombstone inscribed with “Tomb of Huang, the Lady bestowed the title of Shuren, and Luo, the Late Tongyidafu and Right Vice Censor-in-Chief, bestowed posthumously in the eighth year of the JingTai era of the Great Ming.” The stone chamber contains two wooden coffins, with lime sand filling the space between the coffins and the walls, and topped with stone slabs. The southern coffin still has a skull and limb bones; several copper coins were buried with it—the occupant is believed to be Luo Henxin’s father, Luo Chang. The northern coffin contains no skeletal remains, only dozens of copper coins, presumably belonging to Luo Henxin’s mother, Huang, who died young and whose bones no longer exist. At the time of Luo Chang’s burial, copper coins were used symbolically in place of her remains for a ceremonial joint interment. Five pottery jars are placed on the southern side of the tomb ceiling, with a stone epitaph at the front. The tomb of Luo Henxin’s grandparents bears a tombstone inscribed with “Tomb of Wang, the Lady bestowed the title of Shuren, and Luo, the Late Tongyidafu and Right Vice Censor-in-Chief, bestowed posthumously in the eighth year of the JingTai era of the Great Ming.” This tomb has neither inner nor outer coffins; behind the tombstone are five small pottery jars and one large one. According to the inscription, this tomb was built at the same time as Luo Chang’s tomb and is considered a symbolic joint burial.

Luo Henxin was born in the ninth year of the Hongwu era of the Ming Dynasty (1376), became an imperial scholar in the second year of the Yongle era (1404), rose to the position of Left Vice Censor-in-Chief, served for many years defending the frontier, retired at age 74, and passed away in the first year of the Tianshun era (1457) at the age of 81. He authored the book *Juefei Ji* (*Collection of Awakening from Delusion*).
